Hey everyone,

i'm a 4th yr canadian student planning on applying to US dental schools ( private ones ofcourse). However, a lot of them have specifically mentioned that the LOR should be from a chem, bio or physics science professors which I took in my 1st year and didnt really ace them or anything so its really unlikely that they would write me good LOR. I was wondering do they still accept LOR from upper level science courses such as neuroscience or neurophysiology. Those who applied, did you guys face any difficulties or disadvantages compared to others regarding your LORs.
Also does it matter if the professor is not an official faculty member or is a guest professor ( but has Phd)? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Use the Search function this has been spoken about numerous times.

It won't matter if they are from gen bio 1 or neurophysiology. In fact, it will probably look better if they are from upper level science courses as you probably are in much smaller classes and interact with the prof more.

As far as it being a visiting professor, again I don't think it will matter. I think the important part is that they have a doctorate and you took a class from them.

👎 Boo @ wired.

Why boo? The search function is there for a reason. Search first then ask later 👍

Funny, because the Case vs UoP thread proves that is incorrect. Read your PM and stop harassing me.
End of discussion (on my part)

You have a knack for being at the center of all things dramatic on pre-dental SDN.

I think you should look in the mirror and see who starts what 🙂 You apologized before and said you wouldnt make these responses. I think you should stick with that apology and act on it.

And I think you should begin to take steps towards breaking your SDN addiction.

I said the same thing to you in a PM wired, and you went off on me..... How odd.

no one went off on you. This is exactly the type of antics I was talking about. This useless following around that you seem to NEED to do.

If an answer is given and you're not truly obssessed with following me around, whats the point of responding in the thread above? Do you just need your voice heard for some reason? I dont get it.

:whoa:
I have never encountered someone who is obsessed with "IF I SAID SOMETHING, NO ONE ELSE CAN SAY ANYTHING SIMILAR AFTERWARDS"...... We have the same opinion about a thread. BIG DEAL. If anything, it just means I agree in that case. I did not mock you, name call you, insult you, and didn't even disagree with you. I don't get why you are getting so upset about that. And if you are losing sleep over this, you can easily ignore me.

I apologize for the earlier posts. I'm going to give you my two cents since the majority of this is bickering and little is advice that pertains to your question.

My LOR's came from a physics professor, a biology professor, a neuroscience professor, and a psychology professor. You need at least three but I got four. One of them was visiting. It would be best to seek LOR writers who you were close with (from a small class or multiple classes or research perhaps) or from classes that you did pretty well in. I agree with white fang that letters from people who taught you upper level courses would be better anyways.

Good luck and apologies again 🙂

Every school has different requirements (dont listen to everyone on here because some people give very bad advice) you should via the individual schools website for the direct info but here's what i used:

1 bio prof
1 chem prof
1 AP prof
1 dentist letter

if your school has a committee then you need to provide a committee letter (in most cases) otherwise you get individual letters from your profs. Again some schools require bio or chem or liberal arts or employer LORs so check the websites of the individual schools for the right info.

OP, it's your thread, and you're a smart guy/gal. I'm sure you can decide which advice is valuable or not 😉

If you have a pre-dental advisor, I would suggest getting in touch with him/her to discuss this. This is important if she/he has a vital role in your committee letter. We all can offer advice from our own opinions but the advisor has years of experience with others. Good luck 🙂

Yup be careful and dont listen to everyone 🙂

guys can you stop quoting wired. the ignore function only works against the original post. if you quote it i can still see..

plus what's the point of quoting him...i think he always has 3 or 4 sdn windows open so he'll see if you responded after him

Apologies, I was unaware that the ignore function only worked for the original post. In the past, wired has deleted his posts after a moderator jumped in though 😉

Thanks for your advice everyone. I guess I'll contact the Universities and ask just to make sure. This whole LOR thing is really getting on my nerves especially when u cant really trust most of the profs at my school w/ the things they might write about you.

And to the person who suggested i should use the searcj function, I think that would be the basic knowledge an applicant to a "professional" school should have and I sure used that knowledge and dont really need to be told what to do.

Thanks again guys,

LOR's can be nerve-wrecking, but you'll be fine 🙂

As for the bold part: Precisely. You're smart enough to make your decisions 👍

Good luck
