So I'm supposed to pick up my BB 9630 (Tour) today, assuming they don't run out between now and 5pm (they had 10 at 3pm).

I was looking at the app store more that Tenaciousgirl mentioned. According to this article, http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2349854,00.asp, the BB app store has doubled it's app to 2000. The Apple app store? About 50k apps. At least we're moving in the right direction here...

I hear lots of people just absolutely hate on AT&T but with ANY cell provider the local quality of service can vary too much to be able to make any sort of generalization that X service is better than Y.

I'd say talk to some friends around you who have AT&T and see what kind of experience they have had.

Maybe this is a regional thing, but I love AT&T. Most of my friends are quite happy with AT&T too. I was previously with Verizon and would not switch back for anything! I thought Sprint was ok, back when I had their service.

This might be a stupid question, but if you had, say, Verizon (which requires a data plan), and a BB, what would be the real advantage of wifi ?

Not a stupid question at all...Basically WiFi is great b/c you can log into wireless networks, which are becoming more and more popular. When you're at a place with wifi, you don't have to use the phone signal and will potentially get a faster feed into the phone. Also, I work in a clinic that is difficult to get a strong signal and I'm able to use their wifi--it is much easier on the battery. I can also log directly on to our paperless chart through the wifi, which is nice in meetings when I want to review something on a patient...I think the issue that most reviewers (for example on CNET) say there is no reason to pay $200 for a phone that doesn't have wifi. HOWEVER, I don't think it is an absolute necessity and the Tour is supposed to be a great phone.

Ditto. Whether AT&T or Verizon is a good choice is as much dependent on where exactly you live as it is the companies themselves.

Good to know. Anyone know about the D.C. or San Antonio service?

Well, I've had my BB Tour for 1.5 days now.

It's great. The actual call quality appears somewhat lower than on my Treo, but that's another issue I guess. I downloaded epocrates as the first app, and it's a little more cumbersome to use without the stylus, but certainly navigable. It also has pill pictures, which the Palm version did not. I haven't downloaded any other apps other than the BB App store, but the web-browsing seems infinately better than the BB curve or even with the opera browser.

The Verizon rep said 25 people were on line since 6am for it. Luckily, I got one of the last ones around 5:30pm. He said they sold nearly 100 that day.

AT&T has always had great coverage in my area, and I've had great dealings with their customer service. That is until I moved to a smaller town and now lose coverage right when you descend into my driveway. So I've only had Verizon.

The thing I really dislike about Verizon is that you can't unlock a phone and just switch the SIM card. Oh no, you've got to let them activate it, so no buying a friend's phone, no getting one off ebay, no using a phone from another service--unless it's a Verizon phone. Very lame.

And a poor selection of phones, at that.

I'm not about paying for a data plan when I'm surrounded by computers all day. Thus, I'm going to miss my Blackjack II. 🙁 Loved the interface, loved the design. Do not like touchscreens like the iphone and the Storm.

Sadly, you can't get the Blackjack on verizon, so I'm stuck with the old MotoQ because Verizon requires newer smartphones to have a data plan (another reason I consider going from AT&T to Verizon a downgrade in service). It's okay, I guess. At least I'm not shelling out 40 bucks a month for internet access.
