Hi, I am really into surgery in general becacuse I like the fact that it is an intellectually stimulating profession and I just think its awesome; but I've gotten scared about trying to get into Medical School because I can't get anything right on the MCAT (I'm a junior in high school btw). So I'm thinking that even tho its by no means easy, the DAT is probably easier, and there must be at least some dental specialities that require surgery besides OMFS, so can you list them in order of most sugery to least?

thank you

Uh, maybe you can't anything right on the MCAT because you haven't taken courses like organic chemistry?

What's the point of this post? Are you trying to say that you would like to be a medical surgeon, but since the MCAT seems too hard you'll go to dental school and specialize in a surgical field of dentistry? If so, why not oral SURGERY?! You don't have to take the MCAT to be an oral surgeon. If that's too intimidating, be a periodontist. You don't even have to have balls to be a periodontist.

ortho. you can do all your own fibrotomies.

Hey kid
If you want to get into medical school or dental school, first trying to be a bit more normal. Why are you worrying about the MCAT or DAT while in Highschool? Its great to be career oriented but everything in moderation...if you are a tool, no school will want you regardless of your test scores....

I remember when I was in grade school I was thinking of being a lawyer but when took the bar exam i didn't do well. Thank God I got into dental school.

Surgeon Hopeful asked me what periodontist do. Can someone help me? All I can think of is, "sit around and wish they were oral surgeons". Anything else?

I thought your parole officer said you couldn't take the bar exam. Better practice those SRPs so you can graduate from dental school!

Some of them can be sincere dicks in the clinic

Careful, someone might get the wrong idea that periodontists are surgeons...

Now come on guys, let ease up on the periopeople...There is this periodontal "resident"(student) at one of the Boston programs who said that he performs "plastic surgery" and that he is more gentle with soft tissue...to a patient, he did not realize that I had stepped in the room...I was relieved when I heard this b/c now I have someone I can consult with my next facial lac! So, for fun, in front of the pt...I said "Dr. Blah, sorry to interupt, but I have a 4cm facial lac that I was wondering you could help me with in regards to managing to soft tissue gently"...ahh so funny. Of course, he then said,"ah, I am sorry I only work in the mouth"

There are so many consults that we can get, think about it. Screw waiting for a neurosurg consult for a trauma case, call our own intraosseous neurosurgeons (endo). Perio is actually is starting to have subspecialtys form- such as perioplastics, there is a transplant team(both a harvest team and transplant team-intense), division of pediatric perio, divison of periodontal hemetalogy, ID, periostroke team, burns team, and aslo the divison of rheumatology dealing with issues such as traumatic occlusion.

The truth is why can't people be proud of what they are doing, all I have to say is if you are doing endo, ortho, etc...great! someone needs to do it, so have fun.

I suppose the transplant team will be flying all around the country to harvest, correct?

Pediatric perio will also come in handy for the rash of juvenile perio cases going around.

Make sure you lose your virginity in high school before even thinking about being normal. And quit hanging out with the band people.

Simply put, as all others have said, I don't understand why you are worrying about the MCAT or DAT now. First off, get into college. Then you have to do well there, try to be an interesting person, and then you can start to worry about if you might get into a medical or dental school. Then you have to take an exam, get in, and do well to even think about a specialty. You are so ahead of yourself, it is ridiculous.

This is freaking beautiful! Instead of Shock Trauma Surgeons, we got Shock Periodontal Surgeons, Radiation Perio-Oncology, and the PICU (not to be confused with peds ICU, because this should now stand for Periodontal Intensive Care Unit!)

i missed this sort of bashing

Keep it comin guyz

Don't forget all the cutting edge implantable reconstruction materials they use... What are they using for 'socket preservation'? I think you just pack some duck turd in there, and put a membrane over it... Wait for it to get infected - Which brings you back to the Perio Surgical ID... It's self propagating.

And don't forget their inroads in minimally-invasive periodontal surgery - 'Atraumatic extractions' and all... I wonder though, is that PerioPlastics code speak for 'slow'?

The truth is that just as you guys bash perio people, that how medical people bash OMFS guys irrespective of the DDS MD.

Actually, all specialties bash every other specialty.

At our hospital, the OMS service is very well respected (regardless of the MD) especially since there isn't a single other service that handles face trauma, neck space infections, or maxillofacial pathology. So I don't know what you are talking about. If any "medical people" bash, it's only because of the $$$ in OMS and not the skill level.

I disagree... Periodontists are the only people who I have run into who introduce themselves to other colleagues as, "Hello, I am Dr So-and-so"

It's a little awkward, because I am simultaneously taken aback at the oddity of such an introduction, whilst silently embarassed for them...

At our hospital, most of the plastics group claim that if they were ever in an accident and needed facial trauma treatment, they would come see us...

I have heard a similar feeling here among other specialists. But if I need some store-bought titties, I'm going to the Plastics guys.

Seriously. We have one guy here that double-stuffs 'em... One above and one below the pec. My freaking hero, along with the dude that invented lululemon pants.

Bashing Perio? I loved those root scalings and arguing with the "perio faculty" whether it was a 5mm or 6mm probing depth. Yeah, that was alot of fun. They can try to treat periodontal disease all they want but I will happily cure it with the business end of a 150.

I had some Perio guy bragging to me about all the 'big' surgeries they were doing these days in their program... Like open flap debridement, and symphyseal grafts... This was a few days after we had just done a case with Neurosurg... 8 year old kid in an ATV rollerover... Coronal, crani, Had to dig his zygoma out of his middle cranial fossa. All in your perspective, I suppose.
