for you guys in the know, which IM subspecialists tend to do the most general care for his/her patients (i.e not always just consulting) in the hospital and/or in outpatient setting?

thanks.

My best guess would be geriatrics.

I know that this is a FP specialty but I think IM is eligible for it. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

IM specialties create specialists...if you want general...why not be a regular internist?

I imagine rheum gets to spend time with general issues in the people's lives.

Thanks Fermata. I'm actually looking to do an extra inpatient IM subspecialty rotation as a third year, but would like to do one on a service that tends to cover the patient's general issues also. I've heard that within inpatient pediatrics, the Hem/Onc folks tend to cover most of their patients general care also. I'm wondering if it's the same for inpatients in adult hem/onc or other subspecialties?

Ahhh yes. I forgot about oncology.

Anyways....it seems that IM specialties have become more procedure-oriented so it may be harder to achieve what you want.

Either way, good luck.

Check to see if any of the subspecialties have inpatient services on which you can rotate. If your team is the primary team for a given patient, you must deal with all his issues while he is in house, no matter what your specialty. Sometimes a given subspecialty service will be all inpatient, all consults, or a mixture of both.
