I love Samsung Note 10. 1 as well. The stylus is actually a lot like using a real pen or pencil. besides I can't imagine the most popular and the best medical app won't come out on Android

what is notability anyways?

Just from what I have played around with I think it is really nice. It will be even more functional with the premium suite update to JellyBean. The ability to multi task in multiple windows, the formula match, shape match, and whole other slew of things is really nice. Plus it has front facing speakers which is an added bonus for Netflix haha. I haven't yet figured out how to get Flash, but I know you can do it.

For me I go with Android mainly because I hate iTunes and I like that I can download music and torrents directly using my phone/tablet. Main reason I went for transformer prime. I love it, especially with jelly bean there is no lag.

Otherwise iPad is awesome, just not for me. Its easier to use for most ppl too. I'm decently tech savvy and like more control and tinkering.

We'll see what you have to say about that remark if Nova gives you guys iPads. Lucky (maybe)!!

Just to let you guys and gals know there is going to be a slew of tablet pc (windows 8) coming out next year after the holiday seaon. Asus Vivo, Samsung Ativs, HP Envy, Lenovo too. Surface is just a teaser. They are all going to have better screen than ipad'a retina display and the keyboard portion can all be used for battery. So hold off from buying ipad. You will have many more option

That's true. I had an iPad 1 when it first came out and liked it. And most of my family uses iphones iPads so I'm familiar with them, just prefer android.

Interesting. I had the iPhone 3GS and liked it. The only thing I didn't like about it was it not being 4G-capable. When the first 4G LTE phones came out I sold my iPhone (made a profit, ftw 👍) and got me a 4G LTE android since the iPhone 4 still wasn't 4G-capable. Now that the iPhone 5s are 4G-capable, I switched back to the iPhone. To me, Apple's medical apps are better. I am curious to see what these Windows 8 tablets are going to offer in terms of medical efficiency power.

alright so i just got the acer aspire s7 which is a windows 8 powered touch screen laptop. just wondering if any of you tech savvy people know whether or not there are stylus pens compatible for these kinds of laptops. i want to use it to take notes on PDF files and in ochem next semester 🙂 thanks!

and my dad has a surface. its a fun little thing.

I was kidding, for starters.

Also, syncing iPhone with iPad was a major draw for me.

Haha gotcha. I guess there is nice syncing between the Note II and Note 10.1. To transfer something I don't even think you need to use a dropbox. I think you choose what you want to transfer and hold the two devices together and it goes automatically. But I honestly really like using a stylus. I get really anal about leaving fingerprints on my screens. Lol.

Well I believe there is an easy way to tell. Can you draw in paint or a note taking program with your finger? If yes then you can get any capacative stylus. All they do is mimic the feel of your finger. If you are talking about an active digitizing stylus then no. Very few devices even have an active digitizer. They are limited to the older windows transforming laptops (they swiveled), the HTC Jetstream, the Samsung Note 10.1, Sony Vaoi Duo, and whatever else comes out within the next few months/years. I believe Samsung is going to be churning out devices like this in the very near future if they haven't already. If I had the coin, I would have gone for the Duo, but my Note does everything I could really ever want it to do minus use the Windows Suite.

Samsung ativ (both versions) will have active digitizer.

I saw that! Personally I like the digitizer. For some it really doesn't matter, but I guess it's just a preference. I just like the feel of having a pen and I think it glides better than a rubber tipped stylus. But to each their own I suppose. 🙄

I've been using PDF Expert on my new iPad and love it. Saved on countless number of toner cartridges as well as tons of paper, i.e. trees... 👍

Things that are important to me in a tablet:

-It's gotta be fast, there nothing I hate more than waiting a minute for netflix to que
-Portable, but large enough where I can see w/o squinting
-Have keyboard attachment
-NOT use windows 8-i seriously hate windows 8 so much
-Have access to good notetaking apps
-Best bang for my buck-I have the means to get whatever kind I would like, but if I'm paying top dollar I better get what I'm paying for
-Good customer service-I have a tendency to use and abuse my electronics

suggestions?

How much space would you expect to need/becomfortable with on an ipad/ipad mini. I'm thinking about the 32gb, but I'd hate to run out of space.

The newest iPad or the iPad mini.

that's kinda what I was thinking as well. I'm not a big fan of the mini tho, too small for me

There's no justifiable point in me getting the mini at the moment. I'll entertain the idea once it comes time for rotations or residency.

I need some advice my significant other is thinking about getting me some sort of a tablet. but if nova is going to give me an iPad should I just not get anything for now and wait until next year or should I just get it right now and then sell the one I'll be getting next year that is if I will be getting it at all. I am probably going to be getting Nexus 10 over iPad though.

I'm also looking into getting the tablet pc Windows 8 but none of them have the screen resolution of next 10 or iPad

Yeah there are many companies selling iPad keyboards. I bought mine from Zagg. They all operate through Bluetooth.

Oh okay cool, thanks for the info.

There is no CD slot in the air which bothers me 🙁

Eh, I barely use the CD slot in my macbook pro so not having it in the air isn't a big issue for me. But if you really needed one, there are usb CD readers you can plug into your air, so my brother tells me.

Well that's ur choice. I think it would be better to wait. If Nova gives out iPads, your brand new tablet becomes obsolete and resale value won't be great.

I recently bought one of the new MBPs which doesn't have a disc drive slot either. I got an apple SuperDrive for Xmas but it turns out my external HP disc drive works just fine.

I second this. I just ordered one and it seems amazing. You can take notes and watch a video at the same time, which is something that I think would come in handy.

Since you have eliminated any windows tablets it really comes down to whether or not you prefer android or apple. I personally have the Samsung Note 10.1 and I haven't felt like there was anything on an Ipad that I couldn't do with my Note. The top apps are on both platforms. For notetaking, there is notability on the Ipad. Some Android devices have specific note taking programs ready to go. For the Note that is S-Note and for the line of Asus tablets it's SuperNote. The Infinity has a designated keyboard, better resolution, and JellyBean. The Note has the digitizer, better battery life (ive been told), and multitasking capabilities. It will be getting an update with JellyBean, but really no word on when that will happen. So it all really comes down to your preference.

👍 nice writeup. Only thing o would add is that NO tablet comes near the battery life of Asus with KB dock. The dock has an additional battery that adds about 6-7 more hours of batt life.

How big is the dock? Does carrying it around make it similar to laptop weight?

Right! I'm sorry I've posted about the Infinity/Prime in other threads so I forgot to mention it. But that is correct that it boosts the battery power. Although you do have to buy it separately. I think it's a good $120 if I'm not mistaken. One of the guys in my Chem class last semester used his in lab and it was pretty neat. But he used it mostly to just get online. He really liked it though. I will admit that I like the metallic looking back as opposed to the Note which is plastic. But honestly, I have mine in a leather case so it doesn't make a difference.

Yeah dock is $120. Well worth it IMO. Comes out to same price as similarly specced iPad. I have the prime which is one generation older but it still got the jellybean update and is so fast. The screen is amazing I love to watch movies on it, I just download HD movie torrents straight from the tablet and it plays them no converting/iTunes needed.

Pretty cool. When you charge it can the tablet and dock be charged simultaneously by one cord (tablet into dock into charger into wall) or do they need to be charged separately? Likewise, can they be charged separately (like if you're traveling and don't want to pack the dock) ?

U can charge it simultaneously. The dock doesn't come with its own charger.

U can charge dock separately, tab separately, or while tab is in dock.

Keep in mind it still is a tab so doesn't have full functionality of laptop.

A windows 8 convertible would be able to do the job of PC and tab. Unfortunately nothing great has come out yet...

The iPad has several add on battery or keyboard/battery options too 👍 And it has the longest tested stand alone battery life of any comparable tablet too.

Some people dont like apple, but I've tried so much tech over the last few years as a part of my vocational life that Ive formed a strong opinion of iPads and MBAs being years ahead of their competitors at this point in time.

Theres other good stuff out there though, but nothing as good in my experience.

Apple is good for simplicity. I have to admit an iPad is easier to use. But when it comes to functionality and customization android can't be beat.

An android tablet/phone can do more than an iPad/iPhone, but the downside is that there is much more fragmentation, variation, and instability with android.

Give it a few months and I'm sure something awesome will come out. Personally I think the Sony Vaoi Duo is pretty awesome. Its heavier than a normal tablet, but has a similar effect. I am intrigued by what the Microsoft Surface Pro will be like. If you like Windows 8 and/or like the ability to use the Windows Suite it seems like an awesome option. But this year is going to be pretty exciting for tech I think. =)

Yea I'm excited to see what comes out. The Sony VAIO seems cool, just not a fan of slider design and don't like that the screen faces out when u store it. My dream computer would have a swivel or yoga design, excellent batt life, and an active digitizer.

Yeah, I agree. But, I think, simplicity (and ease of use) is more important than versatility and complexity when it comes down to using tablets/laptops during medical school. I only can imagine myself like reading books and lecture notes, and jotting down my personal mark ups on these notes, etc. I'm not interested in doing mobile programming sort of things in my new life at medical school... any more (well, I used to do it, A LOT...) So, my vote goes to iPad.

If I'll be able to afford it, I'll definitely be buying a MacBook, as well. I already have an Apple TV. So, I think I'm about to become one of the biggest fans of Apple products since they're simply awesome.

Yeah in some respects Android is easier. U can download PDF from the browser with android. Download ebooks without using iTunes, transfer files, music, movies without having to convert formats. U can hook up flash drive, SD card and get files that way.

How is the Apple TV? I don't know much about it.

http://www.apple.com/appletv/

  • It's a small cube like, slick piece of hardware that you hook to your LAN router and your TV set with HDMI connections. You can also hook it to your home theater system.
  • It lets you mirror your iPhone and iPad screen onto your TV... flawlessly. So, instead of watching your movies or browsing your images on your little iPhone or iPad screen, you'd be using your big screen TV for the family and friends at home.
  • You can share your library of movies, pictures, and apps among your Apple devices or even PCs via iTunes in your local home network via Apple TV.
  • It has also an embedded YouTube, NetFlix, and Hulu (you need membership for the latter two) application.
  • You can rent or purchase the newly released movies via the Apple TV, and can keep them in your iTunes account forever. You can later download or watch them on your iPhones or iPads, too.

Went to the apple store recently and the ipad mini is a little more desirable than the regular ipad. I can't really tell the difference between the displays and ipad mini is much easier to type on.
