WHICHE Peeps

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Out of curiosity, if you are in the WICHE program, are you considered in-state for UW, OHSU, and Nevada?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that for UW, WICHE/WAMMI applicants are considered in state, but for Oregon and Nevada, in-staters and WICHE applicants are just given preference over out-of-staters. This is true with other schools like Colorado, Arizona, and maybe Utah.

Not many people on this board from Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, or Alaska I guess. Just me, a lonely pre-med Montanan.

I think that's part of the reason WHICHE exists.

Thanks for the info Medikit, but I was just trying to find out what's happening with the secondaries for us.

Dumb question, but as an AZ resident, I'm not WICHE-eligible am I? I think this could make a difference as to whether or not U Washington would be even worth trying for.

Kiki, I think that only residents of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Alaska are eligible to apply to the WICHE medical programs because we don't have an in-state medical school. And UW pretty much only takes applicants from those states plus Washington. There are some exceptions though.

L'elephante,

Do you have a mdapplicants profile? I am interested in your progress via the WICHE PSEP as I intend on taking advantage of these opportunities myself.

XT777,
No I don't have an mdapplicants profile, but I can sure share any experience that I've had so far in the process with you. I actually applied for WICHE/WWAMI in June, but I think that the deadline for application is in January or February of 2005. Just call the office of the commissioner of higher education in your state and they'll send you an application with a ton of info.

Although Arizona is a WICHE state you are not eligible to be a WICHE student for medical school. Only the WAMI states are eligible for WICHE in medical school because their states do not have medical schools and this increases their odds for an acceptance (as long as they get a WICHE endorsement from their state which allows the state to pay some of the out of state tuition). Still sucks to be them though . . . the Washington WAMI program has a certain number of spots for each of the WAMI states and in most of the remainder of WICHE states they are given preference over out of states but not as much preference as instaters. In other words there are still not that many spots for them to apply to compared to a non-WAMI state.

Well, I think we use to be a WICHE affiliate (Idaho). Now we just have a WWAMI agreement with UW. U of Nev holds a few seats for us. Utah holds 8 seats for Idaho folks. WWAMI has a nice 18 seats. But we no longer have an agreement with WICHE, so we don't have to get certified through them, just WWAMI. I wish we had other options, but that is not too bad. Also, if anyone f/ the NW is interested in osteopathic med, COMP has the NW track.

L'elephante, what school did you go to in Montana? I went to Rocky.

mspe22med,

Cool. I'm finishing up at Rocky this year. When did you graduate? Were you Bio. or Chem. major? I was almost positive that I would be the only Rocky person on this board. Good to meet ya.

Cool. Got the UW secondary by e-mail this afternoon. Just waiting for LORs to get done I guess.

Yes, that is odd. I did not think I would meet another premed f/ there either. I graduated in 2002. I was an Exer. Sci. major. I didn't decide to go into medicine until after I graduated. I am currently finishing a M.S. degree in Idaho. I will be applying during the next cycle. Good luck to you! I might PM you to see how things at Rocky are going. I haven't been in contact w/ anyone f/ there (except a teacher or two). I played basketball there f/ 2000-2002. Is Claire Oakley still around?

Yep, Claire is still there. She wrote one of my letters of recommendation for me. Are you applying to UW for sure? That's my #1 choice.

Talked to ad office today. OHSU secondaries will be going out in a couple of weeks.

Yes, UW is my first choice as well. Then probably OHSU, Nevada, Med. College of Ohio (I lived there for awhile), then anywhere in the country 🙂 Do you have any fellow med school applicants in your class? (for those that don't know...Rocky is very small) I really don't have any friends/contacts that are in my situation. Nobody seems to go from exercise science to med school 🙂 Have you taken the MCAT yet? I take it in April.

I have two buddies that I just took the MCAT with on April 17th, one of them just graduated from Rocky and the other graduated from MSU-Bozeman. I did pretty good on the MCAT (33N). The writing sample was not my strong suit, but I don't care too much. The WICHE schools that I applied to are Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, and UW. I was thinking about UND in Grand Forks. Colorado's secondary came at the beginning of July and UW's just came today. Pretty excited. Good luck with finishing up in Idaho. What are you getting the M.S. in?

It's not right to be ragging on Montana. It definitely gets my vote for most beautiful state in the nation. I spent about two and a half weeks up there this summer, and the state is amazing. Beautiful farms, mountains, rivers...

I got some snow around July 7, though. 🙂 Okay, so it was on the top of a mountain.

Freaker,

Thanks for defending Montana. Yeah, it's pretty nice out here. Were you hiking up here? What part of the state? The snow around Bozeman at 11,000 feet has just recently melted.
