While in med do you still do childish things ?

This is probably worded horribly but I mean childish hobbies? For example I still play my xbox 360 a lot, when I have the time. ( play games like halo) does anyone here have these little childish thigs that people tell them that they should get over ?

How is it childish? I don't really play video games anymore, but I know a decent amount of adults that enjoy playing various xbox games from time to time. Not the whole 4 hours every night, screaming " fk you noobs" into the mic, but a few times a week for an hour type of thing.

No. I had a time in which I played video games -- it was called middle school. 😛

I was never into games growing up, but plenty of my classmates play. We even have an xbox, N64 and a big screen TV in the med student lounge.

At the beginning of summer, I bought 3 used xbox games... big anticipation of down time between research.

So far maybe I've clocked 10 hours total. Too bad. I could be playing now, but instead I'm reading SDN for some reason.

Glad I didn't throw down cash for one of the new systems.

I mostly lost myself in Championship Manager in whole med school. I remember while marcelo and agüero were only "promising young player"s🙂)) In summers I was sometimes playing 10+ hours a day.

As you get older, you realize that people's personalities more or less stay the same after a certain point. Sure, you get more responsibilities, and you have to act mature and responsible when you're working and when you're around kids, but you don't really change. Everyone enjoys goofing around from time to time, no matter what age you are (unless you never did even as a kid, in which case I'm sorry that you're a boring person).

Whatever floats your boat I guess. I'd rather be doing something fun with friends instead of mashing buttons on a game controller
The saddest thing about my life is being on SDN right now.

Rest of it is awesome.

How useful is that Kinect?

I can see it's potential, but I personally don't use it much and don't play any games that use it. I'm sure kids love it.

The one thing that is cool is that you can set it, if you want, to control your TV, channel guide, etc. So you can come home and say "Xbox On" and it recognizes your face and you can use your hands and voice commands without remotes to do anything on your TV or on apps though the Xbox.

Yeah FIFA/MADDEN/2K is big. There are ppl that play Pokemon, read manga etc. The upside is that ppl tend to be not be socially awkward about it.

The only time I play games are with kids in my family, like cousins and etc

I watched bubble guppies with a kid as they were getting their stitches out

Watching south park is considered immature. 😛

Hmm, I really don't understand why playing video games is "childish" to some people. Yeah, it's irresponsible to play them instead of doing other things that you need to do, or depriving yourself of sleep because you stayed up late playing, but there's nothing wrong with using some of your down time to play a video game. It really is no different than turning on Netflix and watching a movie or TV show, so do you consider that to be childish too?

WiiU is worth it.

You have to realize that there are a lot of young people in medical school because they want to impress people. They want to become doctors and act like grown-ups at age 25. It's artificial, and to people like me painfully obvious. They are obsessed with distant life plans, talk about getting married, having children, financial situations etc all under false pretenses. They can pretend all they want, but that doesn't change they fact that they are 23 years old and living in a shared 3 bedroom apartment that their parents are paying for and have never earned a single cent in their lives. When they get on the wards M3, they are ecstatic and take themselves way too seriously. They say they "are going to work" and pretend like they are 40-50 years old. It kind of reminds me of how little kids play dress up in mommy and daddy's clothes and pretend to be grown ups. They are simply seeking the affirmation of those above them by emulating them. These people are both prevalent and unbearable. Avoid them. There are plenty of people in medicine who march to the beat of their own drum. Get ahold of the dean's office master list of professionalism demerits. Strive to make these people your friends.

I ran several minecraft servers up until a couple years ago. I guess that counts *shrug*

*Frantically attempts to host servers in an attempt to match into something decent* see you guys in a few years, will report back

I read teen paranormal novels (and not from the comfort of my kindle). I play GTA V and Halo and pre-ordered Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. 🙂 And if I walk past a park, I'm getting on the swing.

Childish? Well, you're not doing those things in lieu of your other responsibilities. Understanding that there is a time and a place seems like responsible adult behavior to me.

Be happy OP. There's enough stuff to kill your joy. Don't add yourself to the list.

Wow, I'm really not at all sure how I read that entire post and found nothing remotely mentioning video games.

Besides that I think your attitude about younger med students is seriously ridiculous. "And can you believe those youngins, they actually think they can plan to get married and have kids! What idiots"

Edit: After reading that another time, now maybe I think you're just trolling? Whatever the case, it seems you let out some steam there

Which is strange, cause I never saw med school as "impressive" by a longshot, since it's only just medical school 😛

I love video games, it's one of my favorite hobbies. It's not childish...hell, a ton of people in their 20s play videogames, which makes a lot of sense! It's important to keep your hobbies and interests in med school and beyond, it helps to keep your sanity. I mean, I would hate to give up all my hobbies to force myself to do "mature" things like.....idk, bingo night?

Honestly saying any specific hobby someone has is silly or useless is almost always wrong. The stuff I don't enjoy doing that others do, I still can certainly see the appeal. Just like I'm sure half the stuff I enjoy they're probably like " wtf why would I ever do that." I don't understand the need to reflect on the validity of other's hobbies. So long as they aren't hurting anyone, I don't really see the problem.

I totally agree with PL198

I still paint/draw and bake cookies like I did when I was a kid, but I do that to maintain my sanity amongst all the brain leeching studying. Childish? Nah. Just things I've enjoyed to do since I was a child.

I know lots of people who play video games. A few students play with faculty, lol.

I don't think anyone is saying that painting, drawing, and baking are childish activities.

The chair of my Derm program regularly plays xbox with two other residents in out program. I just never really got into gaming, but they enjoy it.

And neither is playing video games. It's all stress relief/relaxation one way or the other.
It is if it overtakes other activities. You never hear of people who bake too much. But there are people who game too much -- not eating right, not getting enough exercise, etc.

I came here hoping people would be talking about how farting in public is funny.

I play xbox and PC games routinely and I even get my wife involved. Letting her play harry potter at night while I study is a great way for me to take breaks and help her when shes stuck. As long as you get good grades and maintain your health, a few hours of gaming is not a big deal.
