When you button a white coat, do you follow the same rules you do for suit buttons? Namely, do you leave the bottom button undone?

I'm not normally obsessed with fashion or anything, this has just captured my curiosity for some reason.

I think the fashion thing developed out of a need for men and women to be able to sit down, keep their coat together, and NOT pop a button. A white coat has more of a purpose as a shield from blood & other stuff. I think as a student, especially the first 2 years, for convenience sake, treat it as a fashion thing since you won't need to protect yourself as much, and also, you'll probably be getting up and sitting down to take notes, be in class, etc.

Worse comes to worse, just do what your teacher does

Rock it unbuttoned.

I usually leave the whole coat unbuttoned unless someone is going to start bleeding on me soon (ie, I start a procedure).

My favorite: MDs who button all 4 or 5 of the buttons on their long coat. The raincoat look: always flattering...

Agreed. Too many things in your pockets to keep it buttoned, until you reach 4th year, then everything comes out 🙂

On our service, it is completely variable and whether or not it is buttoned and tends to be determined by how heavy your coat is at any given time. For example, many papers, pager, PDA, and so forth - button it because it weighs down your shoulders. After three hours of standing for rounds, you don't care how it looks because it is really that heavy.

The unbuttoned advantage is accessing those inside pockets without the hassel. No one ever does more than two buttons of three if they are a med student - it seems.

(A bit disjointed, I know, I'm post call)
