Hi all,
I found a really great (and free) download for OS X that creates white noise. I often get VERY distracted even by the slightest sound or even when the room is quiet, I start thinking out loud. So this program basically creates "white noise" so that your mind can block out the extraneous stuff and help you focus on the stuff that matters. I hook it up to the computer with my headphones of course, so that others don't hear it.

Research showing that white noise improves concentratin:

Maybe it's just a placebo affect maybe its not, all I know is that I feel more confident in concentrating for this exam.

I've used it before, its pretty cool. There is one that makes pink noise I like even better. That said, the one piece of advice I get universally is that you should study w/ the type of noise you'll get in the test center. So, studying in the library is good, and if you can, study with the TV on low or something. JM.02

Eh, you get headphones at the testing site so that will reduce the noise. Besides, when you get closer to the exam, you really *REALIZE* how much is at stake. I know i will. I'm 3.5 months away from the test and I feel passive about the test right now but I bet as i get to the last month I will crank dat MCAT boy.

You're probably righ tthough that it's best to mimick testing environments, but I'm using hte program more for studying in general.

Btw, I find the pink noise to be grating and the white noise to be softer. I like the white one more, why do you prefer the pink one?

Studying material and noise blocking makes sense...

And, the pink noise just sounded more pleasant to me. Don't know why. 😀

Someone suggested this white noise thing on this forum several months ago. I tried it and didn't notice any difference. Maybe I'm using it wrong.

What do we do with it? Just get headphones and run the software? Listen to the "sound" and ignore what's in the background? Someone please explain.

There is an album on iTunes called "White Noise Loops for Sleep". It has 7 tracks which you can buy individually. This has white noise, pink noise, brown noise (insert joke here), blue noise...etc. I bought the brown noise, it sounds like a waterfall and I think it has a calming effect on me. I don't really know what all of the colors mean besides white.

It's originally meant for people with ADHD/ADD.

I don't have ADD/ADHD (or at least I don't think I do!), but like many people here on these forums, I do get distracted pretty easily by external stimuli (page rustling, people entering leaving rooms, people talking, AND even silence).

It's hard to explain, but you have this internal voice/pictures that keep on interfering with you concentrating on your work, and so "white noise" helps reduce it.

You ever find it difficult to sleep WITHOUT a fan on? Well, I do (as do many others), and even if I'm not hot, the fan's noise just makes me feel more comfortable. It's just another phenomenon of nature that can't be explained with full understanding it just happens.

Wow, I thought I was the only one. I had to buy a big fan to keep in my room when my parents and I moved to our new house; their new furnace was too quiet and I couldn't sleep!

I also have one of those "nature sounds" alarm clocks--I find it really helps me sleep better, as well.

Anyone find any programs for Windows users? I can't find one anywhere.

I just use foam ear plugs. 2 of the tests I took in very loud locales to force myself to focus better. Thanks for the suggestion but I'll just stick with my little foam ear plugs. Headphones begin to hurt my ears after a while. 😛
