Who can I shadow?

I'm a Pre-Vet student at University of Missouri... I'd love to know how to find veterinarians that are open to new job shadows. And I'm just really wondering how to go abut asking... if I should just call them relentlessly...

If you have any names or any places, I'd love all the help I can take.

Don't know anything about Mizzou in particular, but I'm betting they have a pre-vet club and a pre-vet advisor, both of which could probably steer you towards vets who are known to be helpful to new pre-vets. Other than that, cold-calling may work just fine. Some humane societies have staff vets. If yours does, that could be another avenue. And since you're right there at the vet school, find out about shadowing/volunteering in various departments at the teaching hospital. I did that in 2 different areas of our teaching hospital.

I tried the cold calling and sent a few letters around to different hospitals and got no response.

So, I just called my regular vet and explained my situation and he was happy to let me come in and shadow.

I went door to door at a few different vets, including the one I take my animals to. My own vet of 18 years and probably $20K in revenue out of me (part of VCA, which is another story) declined because they had too many students arriving this fall from another country. Another said they didn't take volunteers/shadowing for liability reasons. The third (a smaller one vet shop) was happy to take a volunteer and I'm there now enjoying myself alot. And you can safely assume that my four cats will be visiting vet number 3 in the future. Bottom line, I think in person visits and the smaller vet hospitals are the way to go. Good luck.
