The amount of funding the government gives to the WHO (or food stamps, or the $1200 stimulus, or the NIH) is peanuts compared to what goes to the military, or to the change in tax code included in the stimulus). It is idiotic to cut it in a crisis, full stop. Reevaluate once this pandemic is over. It’s disheartening to see so many right wing talking points here, then I remember it’s the same 10 posters all the time, and I go to work in my red state and see that most physicians don’t have FOX news induced brain rot. Now go back to talking about Kamala Harris (she has a lot to do with Trump’s cuts to WHO funding, right?).
Having bigger wastes in other places doesn’t mean we shouldn’t cut this one, that’s a poorly structured argument.

I don’t have cable news

I wouldn't have cable (at all) if my HOA didn't give it to me, packaged with DVR and web for 33 bucks a month.
Seriously. This is ONE thing that the HOA is getting right.

Otherwise, eff the HOAs.

So wait.....an organization that has been influenced (to put it mildly) by the Chinese, and failed to alert the world to potential pandemic that had repercussions for billions of people shouldn't have consequences? Why would we keep throwing extra money at a propaganda arm of the CCP? This pandemic had demonstrated that China's interests diverge from the rest of the world.

Calling the WHO, the organization that coordinated the eradication of polio, facilitated expansion of Tdap administration, almost eradicated leishmaniasis a ‘waste’ is so counterfactual there’s just no point in pretending to have a good faith discussion. But good for you on the cable.

You’re missing the forrest for the trees. No one ever said they don’t do good things. In fact, this is often the problem with a lot of very left leaning ideologies. They are often good ideas, but the question is 1) who’s responsibilities are they and 2) at what cost.

It would be great to fix homelessness and poverty and hunger and aids and cancer and have free college and perfect roads. The problem is that when organizations get large, they bloat. And all of this costs money. How much money are you willing to forcibly remove from tax payers against their will to achieve the ends that you think are important?

I’m not missing the forest for the trees.
I was responding directly to the person who said that the WHO never helped anyone except for China. I provided an anecdote of how they have helped someone (many communities) outside of China. We can debate all day about whether the WHO is beneficial and how much their budget should be, I have many thoughts on that, but I was simply respond to point out that they indeed have benefited someone.

As my post already said the US government over many many decades has been crappy.

I have no comment to the rest of your post because it doesn’t have anything to do with my response, not sure what "left-leaning" ideologies you’re talking about because I never said anything about free college, etc.

The harm the WHO has done likely outweighs any good they have done recently.

I'm honestly interested, what is the harm that the WHO has done?

And I'd like to note that "the harm that penicillin has done outweighs any good [it has] done recently" is alsona true statement.

Being the one trusted to sound the alarm at the beginning of a pandemic and dropping that ball (potentially intentionally) sure looks loke harm to me

Thank you. That's helpful.

What you describe looks like a failure to me. No disagreement there. But failure does not equate to harm. I fail in harmless ways every day.

It is only with a definition of "harm" (and, for that matter, "good") that we can evaluate the claim that the WHO does more harm than good. Anyone who argues for the WHO on here had better be able to define "good", so can't we also demand a definition of "harm"?

I genuinely am interested - what is the harm that the WHO has done?

Are you arguing that it wasn’t harmful to downplay (again, maybe intentionally) a developing pandemic?

Defunding the WHO certainly should not be due cost.

The US yearly contribution is about 500M
The US yearly budget is about 3.8T

That is 0.0131% of our budget. This is a fraction of the pennies on the dollar.

Just for comparison. The average ER doc on this form probably makes $400K/year. That same percentage of his pay would come out to $52.40. Chump change.

You can defund them but it won’t accomplish anything. Better thing to do is to fix it. How hard can it be? The WHO doesn’t do astrophysics. They tract (among other things) infectious disease outbreaks. How hard can that be?

We don’t control them, that’s why we don’t fix it. We just move on

Failure to act when they have a duty to act isn’t a harm?

That would be fine, but then we would have numerous little organizations or groups of countries forming their own organizations around the world that won't talk well together during a pandemic.

That would lead to a pandemic as well.

I think pandemics lend themselves to international cooperation. If a bunch of countries can't get together to form a single organization to do contract tracing, which a bunch of high schools could accomplish, then we as a species are doomed.

Perhaps we are doomed anyway.

He’s course and arrogant, but it’s pretty dishonest to portray him as equally demented given biden’s behavior
I always knew that you were a republican portraying yourself as a libertarian... You think Trump is ONLY arrogant!

Then you're aware that he has been demonstrating his extreme cognitive decline to the public for almost 4 years?
Biden? Oh dear, yes

Trump? Not remotely to the same degree. I think he’s largely the same guy he always was (you can make that a compliment or insult depending on your view of the guy)

WHO fights infectious diseases in poor countries. Maybe the recent crisis should have shown how no one is isolated from something that can start half-way across the globe?

Speaking of Biden, does anyone know why he only does video chats & hasn't left his basement in a month? Does he have COVID-19?

(Fun fact: Osama Bin Laden wanted Biden to be President and planned to assassinate Obama because he saw Joe Biden as ineffective and unprepared. This was in 2012, when his brain was almost ten years younger than it'll be on inauguration day. Confirmed by liberal Washington Post & U.K. press.)

Cuomo criticizes McConnell’s remarks on state virus aid:

“NY puts in to that federal pot $116B more than we take out ... KY takes out $148B more than they put in.

Sen. McConnell, who's getting bailed out here? It's your state that is living on the money that we generate”

It's been long overdue that someone makes that clear to most of these "red" states... that contribute nothing to the US economy.

Speaking of Biden, multiple polls released over the last two days show him with substantial leads in key states such as Wisconsin, PA, Mich, NC, and Florida.

Fun fact, Trump suggested using UV light inside the body and the injection of "disinfectants" as potential cures that "are being investigated" in his daily briefing this evening. I cannot honestly believe there are educated people who think that Trump's speeches are intelligible, honest, reassuring, and cohesive. How can there be no truth anymore?

I don't think truth matters.

I thought that was a joke until I saw it...

Politicians lose their jobs if they tell the truth.
The get re-elected if they lie.

Makes sense to me!
You're 100% right. Since I've been studying persuasion (informally) this has become quite clear. Politicians (and salesman) know that if they tell a lie, as long as it matches with their supporters' (and hopefully enough undecided voters' in the middle) preconceived biases, people will accept it 100% of the time without bothering to fact check (confirmation bias). Furthermore, even if they realize it doesn't pass the fact checking, they don't care, because continuing to believe their preconceived notion and a lie that feels right, is easier and more pleasant than allowing in cognitive dissonance and then rewiring their thinking. They know that decision making by humans (yes, including you and I) is informed 90% by emotion and 10% by facts. They know that people use emotions to make their decisions first, then pick and choose their set of "facts" to fit their decisions, not the other way around, which is how we all think we do it.

If this sounds remotely interesting and not entirely like word salad to anyone, google "persuasion reading list" and you'll get a great list of pretty interesting books on the subject. Learning about this stuff, makes a lot of things about the world that seems crazy and confusing, suddenly make perfect sense.

Good lord, dude. Your toxic hyperbole is the problem with America right now. You’re right, red states contribute nothing. Might as well just send everyone who lives there to the gas chamber.

Cool, end all the federal funding of states. All of it.

Trump was suggesting this is a good opportunity for Americans to get a colonoscopy. And a flu shot.

And I’d dare you to stand up and say something like that in front of our military men and women who defend your freedoms and are overwhelmingly southern/midwestern and conservative. How well do you think our economy would run without our armed forces?

Ultraviolet germicidal irridation is actually used in many ways to sterilize bacteria or viruses. Its used in labatories, waste water management, food protection, etc. Trump is not a scientist. He should have had Fauci explain it.

I saw the UV LIght/Heat thing and I agree it was bizarre. It wasn't completely clear what he was saying. I think he misinterpreted "heat kills the virus" as meaning we could use that as some sort of therapy.
It's like when I tell a patient with no medical background whatsoever, "Your MRI shows a pinched nerve causing your pain. We can do an epidural steroid injection, "a cortisone shot in your back,' to reduce the pain. It also it shows a kidney cyst which is not causing your pain, but that you need to talk to your Primary doctor about, to have checked. Do you understand?"

"Yes doctor. I understand."

Then they turn to their spouse and say, "Hear than honey? Isn't that great?! He's got an MRI machine, that's gonna inject medicine into my kidney, take the cancer away, so my cardiologist won't have to do one of those painful back shots that could paralyze me! When can we do it, doc?"

I'm starting to think Trump might not even be a doctor.

Thanks, I don't think any of us knew this...turns out bleach & fire will also kill microbes! Doesn't mean that we should encourage patients to ignite themselves with gasoline.

No one is expecting him to be a doctor. In fact, he could just not talk about "medical stuff" and let the actual doctors do that. Instead he has promoted a drug that doesn't work (with the help of Fox News and Dr. Oz) and now said asinine things about injecting disinfectants. I think we can expect basic intelligence, thinking before speaking, and knowing when to defer from the president of the United States.

It is amazing how many people (much less physicians) will defend him regardless of what he says...just take the "L" on this one. Admit it was stupid without excuses or whataboutisms. You can be still be a Republican and think Trump is a *****, I promise.
