During your M3 year, what percent of the time do you spend interacting with: classmates, upperclassmen, interns/residents, attendings, and (your books)? I know this varies by school/rotation. So to be more specific, let's just say internal med, and a city school attached to a university hospital. Just want to get an idea of what M3 year's going to be like.

You'll see your MSIIIs on the same medicine team all the time. You'll see the other MSIIIs on medicine at morning report, noon conference, and lectures. You probably won't see many other MSIIIs, unless you have a patient that has a surgery, psych, or other consult. You'll probably see very few MSIVs, except probably the few doing medicine subIs. You'll be in a lot of contact with your interns/residents on your team. You'll probably only see your attending once a day when you round.

Plan on seeing a psychiatrist on a regular basis. :meanie:

You'll spend the most time with the interns/residents and other students on your team. How much you see your attending will vary on the rotation... in Surgery, we frequently only saw our attending when we were in the OR, or when the residents were giving quick updates to the floor patients. We rounded with the residents. On ophthalmology, I virtually never saw the attending. On medicine, we rounded with the attendings, and then my attendings would give some sort of afternoon lecture. On inpatient peds, I pretty much only saw my attendings for rounds or when I had to present a patient that came in during the afternoon. On OB, I pretty much only saw the attending when there was a C-section, or briefly during vaginal births.

When I was in clinic, I worked primarily with attendings (except surgery clinic, then I worked with the NPs more), either because the residents had their own patients to see and present, or because there weren't any residents in the clinic.

The only time I really worked with MS4s was when I was on medicine (I was on in July) and Peds (September), when they were either doing away rotations on our service, or were doing their sub-I. Otherwise, I only saw them in passing in the halls.

The MS3s not on my team--if they were on the same service as me, I'd see them at lectures, but otherwise, it was really intermittent. I saw some of the peds people more when I was on OB, and saw a number of students when I was on psych consults, but beyond that, I didn't really see MS3s not on rotations with me.

Time wise for my internal med team:

MOST other med student on my team >> interns >> senior residents >> other med students on same rotation > attending >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>med students on different rotations LEAST

Depends on the service. On surgery I was in the OR with my chief or fellow all day, so I saw them more than the interns. I saw the attendings in the OR only or rarely on afternoon rounds.

Medicine - Was primarily with the residents. Would see the attending at rounds, possibly for an afternoon lecture.

Psych - Worked closely with the attending and resident. The attending generally gave me my own patients who I presented directly to him without going through the resident, although the resident was expected to know the basics of the patient.

Peds - Saw the attending at rounds. Very kush peds service, so I either didn't see them again, or I'd see them all day as we just hung out on the floor.

Ob/GYN - Saw the attendings at Deliveries/C-sections/surgeries/pre-op. Never saw them at rounds.
