Who got accepted with less than a 3.0 GPA?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That 2.5 is going to kill you. Calculate how much your GPA would raise if you retook courses you did poorly and apply to DO schools. You could get a good MCAT and apply for SMP programs. You could also get a decent MCAT and apply to Caribbean schools. It is very unlikely that you will get into a MD school in the US. On the positive side your science GPA should be looking pretty nice. A post bac will do very little for your GPA. Hope this helps.

but as I had added all my course work on the AACOMAS application- it came down to it a hideous 2.5. (it has not been verified yet..)

I don't know if you are applying this year but all I wanted to say is, most schools screen primary applications. they have gpa cutoffs you might want to check out. Chocolate bear posted a thread, search for it.

Thanks for the input! i really appreciate it!

yeah, im planning on only applying to DO schools and carribeans (altho i really dont want to go to the carribeans unless i have to).

i just recalculated my gpa because i realized i made mistakes in "coding" the classes/grades for a few of the classes i retook. now my gpa is at a 2.7 - i know thats still very bad. so this year im just going to take more upper level bio courses and ace them like i have been doing (maybe my gpa will budge a little, but seeing how i have s many credit hours, i wont budge by much).

im thinking about applying to lecom post bac because i dont see any other feasible option out there for me.

I would also retake all C grades and below. This would raise your GPA the fastest. Taking upper level course will not raise your GPA fast enough, unless you took 15 credits for three semesters and got all A s. Your main goal is to get above a 3.0.

Thanks! I actually started to make my schedule today. Im taking 4 courses that i received C's in back in the day.

and your right. i actually played around with the aacomas calculator a bit, and if i take like a years worth of classes (say about 5 repeats to replace the C's and like 3 other bio courses) my gpa will come to a 3.0. not above, and not below lol. assuming i receive all A's. so thats my plan for now.

That's a good idea, but it would raise it faster if you retake the F's you posted about earlier.

Yeah about the F's- i do want to take them over again- but currently im going through the deans office to have them dropped. They were supposed to be Withdrawals- but because my paper was mailed out a week later- they didnt accept it. im still trying though. my professors even signed a "extension to the Withdrawal deadline" forms to help me out. but if all that fails- ill just retake those F's.

We got the same stats except that I have not yet taken the mcat. When are you applying?

ben
I'm applying with a (unless AACOMAS
changes things up on me) a 3.02 overall gpa, 3.79 sGPA, and a 26Q MCAT.

I have a pretty checkered academic past. I've been taking postbacc classes for 2 years and have, so far, managed a 4.0. Hopefully my upward trend will be noticed!

Clearwaters im in the same exact situation as you I think.

This coming year (which starts in a week), I'll be retaking my pre-req classes in which I basically had all C's in. If i get mostly A's and B's this year (a 3.6 average) in these retakes , I will have a 3.2 cGPA/3.25 sGPA by the end of next year.

I am debating whether or not to take a few new upper level sciences classes instead of doing all retakes though (so then I will be doing 3 pre-req retakes with 1 upper level science for 4 total courses...as opposed to doing simply 4 pre-req retakes). My GPA wouldn't go up as fast this way, but i think it would be more impressive to get an A in a new upper level science rather than getting an A in a pre-req the second time taking it. What do you think?

Hi! well, to answer your question- have you taken any upper level bio courses and recieved A's in them? if so, then you should probably just spend your time on retaking the prereqs you received C or less in.

personally, i have taken a good 1.5 years worth of upper level bio courses and received A's and B's in them. so, im not going to really worry about them too much. the only reason i am taking 1 upper level bio (that is not a repeat) because i actually genuinely have interest in the subject being taught. thats all. besides that, all the other courses are the ones that i screwed up as an idiot during freshman year lol

so, i think that if you already have a lot of upper level bio courses under belt and you did well in them- then you probably dont really "need" to take more. but if you dont have many of them on your transcript- then it actually would be a good idea to get some done. even tho it will slow the process of raising your gpa- it will show that you did take upper level bio courses that you had NOT taken before and have done well in them.

hope this helps!!

btw- which year are you applying for?

best of luck! just get A's and work hard. it will be a process. but you will get there. i have been taking post bac classes for a while now to improve my undergrad gpa. luckily i have been doing well- but those under grad gpa are stubborn! lol

was reading through this thread and figuered maybe I could help. Retaking courses that you have recieved a C or less in is by far the Fastest way to raise your gpa. The end of last year I have a 2.6 overall and a 2.2 science. I took 2 upper levels recieved a B in one and an A- in another. I retook 2 courses, Physics II and Chem I that I recieved a D and a C- in. I recieved a B+ in physics II and a A- in Chem I. along with other NON science courses and 2 1 credit seminars neccesary for graduation(I recieved a B and an A) My overall is a 2.9 and sci is a 2.68. This next semester I am retaking Bio I and chem IV as well as taking biochem. I plan on applying this cycle with my gpa because I am hoping my mcat score comes back semi impressive. retake your prereqs but dont kill yourself either. It is by far the fastest way. good luck

Clearwaters26 and kypreos, I guess it does make sense to just do re-take classes then. I have already had around 8 upper level sciences (genetics, biochem 1+2, Neuro, etc).

I am planning on applying for the 2011 class. And actually, I kind of have to apply for the 2011 class and no later, because my mcat score is going to "expire" for many DO schools after 2011. So, I have a year and no more to improve my app (I think I can do well on the MCAT again, but I don't want to have to take that chance. I think the MCAT is way too fluky nowadays as it is only 7 passages a section...as opposed to the 10 or 11 passages it used to be).

Hey Guys, this is great info, but I have a similar circumstance. I did an undergrad in Biophysics at the University of Michigan got a 2.7, I was working a ton.

Then I traveled, and it opened my eyes, I quit one my jobs and my grade went to almost all A's my last year of undergrad. Then I completed a master's in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Bio at University of Michigan as well. Got a 3.5, finishing with all A's and one B+, then I traveled more, working at medical clinic in Nepal, South Africa, Peru and volunteered in a bunch of other ones. I have now been to more than 30 different countries, volunteering in five different continents. I got a 29 MCAT, 9B,11P,9V.

Do you think my travels and volunteering all over the world will offset my bad undergrad?

Oh, I have also two years of Biophysics research under my belt as well.

Thanks much, I really appreciate it.

Apply early and broadly you will get in and also consider DO. All you need now are good LOR and a banging personal statement😍😍😍[
