Texas A&M doesn't get Labor Day off, and everyone I talk to (family etc) thinks its wierd and "un-American"

Anyone else's University not give the day off? I am thinking because we are so conservative...

When I was in undergrad, we never got any holidays off. No labor day, no Columbus day, no election day, and if you were there for summer sessions, no Memorial day, and no Independence day. Nope! haha.

The only day we got off was Martin Luther King day, and it wasn't really a day off - classes were just rearranged so that we had an extra Monday at the end of the semester.

I get it off from school, but since I chose to work in a hospital, I have a lovely 10 hour shift to look forward to. At least it's time-and-a-half.

I haven't even started school yet; first day is day after Labor Day. I have a feeling my last day of class is going to be ridiculously late this semester... I think last day of finals was December 23rd last year. Dammit.

With your GPA I wouldn't even waste my time volunteering. 👍

I get Labor Day off but follow that Monday's schedule on Tuesday. The lost Tuesday is made up on Pacing Day in October. We don't get any other holidays off except Thanksgiving. Easter break is a mere weekend of the traditional type.

Duke here, no labor day 😡

Cornell: No labor day, president day...hell if Cornell had 30 inch snow..we would still be expected to attend lectures!

I get it off (first time since high school) but I have to study for block exams all day.

Frankly, I'd rather sit in class and not have to study. 🙄

It kind of surprises me schools don't have the day off...not so much because of the students but because of all the union workers that are on campus. Maybe those places don't have that? Also, a large percentage seem to be private...wonder if that means anything with it.

Eh? Inuranic said that it's "work" with "time and a half." Gotta pay the bills....

Hellz yeah. My LSU interview travel expenses set me back $350. Tack on that 2-3 grand spent applying...the ~$200 each airfare for some of the other schools...I need to sling dope or something. This is getting ridiculous.

I curse my family for not being rich. I sing the praises of the Gods Visa and MasterCard.

Campbell University (in NC) doesnt get Labor day off, in fact about the only day off is christmas lol, We even go to school the day after easter which ruins everyones easter plans

We're lucky and get a week split over the semester... Monday and Tuesday over Labor Day, and Wednesday through Friday over Thanksgiving. We also get out of school like December 15th this year, which is pretty nice.

I have to work on Tuesday though... first day at my new job.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi does. 😍

never had Labor day off, in HS or college. or presidents, martinluther king, etc. Memorial day we had off in HS, in college that was after the school yr was out.
Quite frankly, I didnt even realize that monday WAS labor day till my boss sad s/t yesterday in a meeting. im still planning on coming in, why waste a day watching tv if i can potentially finish the paper were trying to get published instead??

My undergrad never got Labor Day off. We even had our first day of classes on Labor Day a few times (yeah, we start late).
One of the worst things was that we never got Martin Luther King Day off either. Since my school was in a sorta southern area, a lot of racist people in the community thought it was great that we didn't get that day off. *shutter* Made me feel dirty...

Dangerous thinking there.

What's up with you guys? We get Labor Day off, Veterans Day off, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for Thanksgiving, and finals are the second week of December so if I get out of taking them, I'm off after the first week of December (Dec. 8th or something).

In the Spring, we start January 8th or 9th or something, then get MLK Day off. We also get a week for Spring Break and classes end the first week of May. Summer classes get Memorial Day and Independence Day off.

I know that in the northeast, lots of schools start the last week of January for Spring semester and also get a week off in February for winter break and another week off in April for spring break. What's up with that?

My friends have something like that, but they're on a 4-1-4 program, or 4-2-4, or something... so they start in early January, do 1-2 classes in January, then get a break in February.

UCs and CSUs are pretty cushiony. We get everything off, even Cesar Chavez Day.

Woo I'm at work right now. Man am I happy to be here.

I am now going to use this time to prepare talking points for interviews. Another slow day...

I may not have class today, but today is in no way "a day off"

welcome to med school kids.
