Scared ****less when they read the stats of the people who have been accepted to med school?

I just pray someone wants to put me in their class because I'm "unique". It sure as hell won't be because of my 3.9gpa!

Guess I'll have to wait till April to see how lousy my MCATs will be.

Better start workin' on that personal statement...

Seriously, congrats to everyone who's gotten in. You guys are awesome! (and the people who haven't, well, the game ain't over yet)

:D

If you go into the MCAT with the attitude that you're going to get annhilated then you will!

Sit your butt down, study you a$$ off and get into med school. Being scared or worried is a great way to keep yourself from being bored, but it's not going to do a whole hell of a lot of good...It's kinda like sitting in a rocking chair.

A good personal statement is essential. I literally spent months perfecting mine. As a result I got 27 interviews (out of 27 schools applied to). I filled out 25 of them. At this point I've been granted 16 interviews (3 in the last 3 days).

I don't have a 4.0 and didn't get a 40 on the MCAT, but I DID find ways to make myself unique. You can do the same.
Good luck.

UCLA2000, 16 interviews....holy hannah! I am a firm believer that the first stages are purely a numbers game. I am sure your GPA is at least a 3.5 and MCAT score is somewhere near a 30? If not, what the hell did you say in your personal statement that was so profound? Please share.

I agree TEDillard...it's very discouraging for me to see all the high stats I'm competing with, esp since I haven't been accepted yet. I think that's why InterviewFeedback.com doesn't post stats....on their faq page, they said people could lie about them, defeating the purpose.....but we know SDNers never lie ;) (sorry just my celosa side talking)

I think the average GPA and mcat on this forum is really high, so don't get discouraged. Proof of that is the Texas match thread. Most of the people matched at Southwestern, the school with the highest average stats.

Maybe people with lower stats just don't post them as often as those with high stats.....I'm sure our thoughts are skewed by this site..I've been more paranoid since I found it..also, a lot of the people here have taken the mcat more than once and done grad work, so of course their scores are high....they worked at it!

sorry they're above the numbers you've stated... 33mcat 3.7gpa. My extras and letters are what really did it for me though.

I'm not going to list it because frankly it would take me a good 10 min. to think of all of the volunteer work that I've done since junior high school. Suffice it to say that I received a U.S. Presidential National Service Award, a UCLA Chancellor's service award, and around 4 others.

I agree with you that numbers are VERY important, however they become less important once you reach the 30 3.5gpa point. That's where the extras come into play.

I have found from personal experience that some people sacrifice their scores at the expense of gaining volunteer experience. I fell into that trap my first two years of college, and then later learned that scores were extremely important. I raised my gpa from a 3.4 to a 3.7 by getting straight A's my last 2 years in school. NO...not because I'm smart. It was because I sat my butt down, and studied 5 hours per day during the week, and 6 hours per day on weekends.
It's not impossible, it just takes hard work and dedication.

If your numbers suck...raise them. If they're good but you lack volunteer work...then volunteer but don't let your numbers drop too much. Lastly had find a way to stand out from the crowd. How did I do that?

1. I had just gotten to the pro level in martial arts before I transferred to UCLA.

2. Published poet

3. Culinary school graduate

Find something to make yourself stand out.
