SOme of the interviewers i have had have walked into the room and specifically called my name. Do they assign certain candidates to certain interviewers for certain reasons? or do you think it is very random?

like most things, depends on the school... some of the schools i went too it seemed like they specifically assigned me to a certain interviewer for reasons only known to them, while at other schools the interviewers just interviewed someone and then came back and asked the secretary who was next, then took someone else, seemed pretty random, just whoever was available at the time would be who you got.

I think that at a couple of schools that I interviewed at they tried to match faculty which had backgrounds and interests similar to mine. This is pure speculation, but the coincidences of "oh, you majored/worked in this" and so on lead me to think that the pairing was not random.

i think you are right on about the matching similar backgrounds/interests part. i noticed that at all of my interviews, if there was a female interviewer available, she was assigned to me. one of my friends also commented that at at least one of his interviews, he had a really good conversation with the interviewer, who happened to have a personal interest in a particular hobby that he is very involved in. could be a coincidence i suppose, but i don't think it is a bad idea at all to make the interviewee as comfortable and open as possible by putting them with someone who they can relate to in some way.

It depends on the school. At some schools they had question prepared for me, while at other schools my interviewer got my file a few minutes before the interview. If the interviewer has not read your file (you can tell in 1 minute if they have not), try to explain any bad marks on your record to make sure your interviewer knows what happened. It is also a good idea to stress your finer points, if they interviewer hasn't read your file up to this point chances are they are never going to.

Now that you mention it, I think they did match me to my interviewers. Two of the dentists that I shadowed were former students of my interviewers. I just thought it was a lucky coincidence.
