Who is coming to University of Miami?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone been accepted and made it their final decision yet? if so, where'd you go to undergrad?

I got in and already sent in my money, and I'm 99% sure that I'll be attending there come May 2011! I am completing my Undergrad at Arizona State.

niceeee. that makes 2 of us on this site! Hopefully a few others get on here and we can start a facebook group or something. Have you looked into housing down there? I started the other day and the rent is pretty steep, especially in the Brickell area. Whatever, only 3 years and from the sounds of the faculty and students, quite possibly the best 3 years of our lives.

I haven't really started looking into anything yet. I am excited about everything though!

I am thinking of applying to The University of Miami to enter in 2012. They tout their DPT experience as being enriching academically and socially. I haven't seen other programs speak to the weather, the environment, and other social factors as much as their program.

When you went to visit/interview did you feel a similar vibe? How were the faculty members? What did the current students say of the program, etc?
I know there has to be a reason why the program is so highly ranked but I wanted to hear your thoughts. 🙂

NYCPT

I interviewed in November and I was impressed with what I saw. The faculty seemed like they were on top of everything (information about the program, information about their specific field of study, current issues in PT, etc.) The students seemed to love both the program and the professors. I got the sense that Miami tries to foster a family atmosphere among students, as well as between students and professors. I didn't hear the faculty/staff mention anything about the weather...but the students did. They said that they don't have class on Fridays, so having nice weather allows them to enjoy their 'day off' as much as possible.

One thing that they did mention is that they are committed to staying in the top 10 of DPT rankings. I realize that rankings don't mean a whole lot to some people, myself included, but I want to be proud of where I earn my DPT degree and I feel like I will always be proud to say that I graduated from Miami DPT school. One thing that I wasn't impressed with was the Plumer building. The classrooms seemed liked they were old, but I wasn't bothered too much by it. Anybody else have any input??

Thanks Chicago!!!! I don't want to be too personal and ask you your exact GPA, but could you share a range so I can see if I even have a shot.

Programs list their average GPA for accepted students, but I am frequently reading that students are being rejected or not even granted interviews that fall within their range.

NYCPT

I don't mind sharing my information with you. I know how stressful the application process can be. According to the PTCAS website, my overall/total GPA is 3.92 and my combined Science and Math GPA is 3.97. On the GRE, I scored a 660 on the quantitative, a 520 on the verbal, and a 4.5 on the analytical writing. I applied with 140 observation hours in a variety of settings. From my experiences, good grades and test scores will get you the interview. However, during the interview, just being yourself (showing that you can talk and that you have a personality) and demonstrating that you understand the career field (current issues in PT, what a typical day is like as a PT, the positive influence you can make on a patient's life) will get you into the school.

I hope this helps!

Chicago,

Thanks for sharing your stats. Good job, you did well!!!! I need to really focus this semester and finish with two A's, so I can compete. 🙂

I am sure you will do well at Miami!!! Good luck.

I'm going to apply now to UM, do you have any other advice? I'm going to take the GRE now in June, but my gpa is not the best. 🙄

Hey guys/gals,

I just wanted to let you know that this thread will be moved to the pre-PT forum. We have decided that there should be a clarified delineation between students considering or applying to DPT school versus current DPT students and/or professional.
