When is the deposit deadline and who is NOT accepting Tufts' offer because they have been selected at another school?

I got accepted Jan. 22 but official withdrew yesterday because I want to go to VCU instead. The whole vertical expansion/crowded hallways/constant elevator riding issue scared me.

I plan on letting my deposit deadline pass as well. Although Boston would be a sweet place to live, I don't want to deal with major construction. Also, I'd rather buy a house somewhere than pay Boston rent.

In ours they made it sound like it was NOT going to be that intrusive to the point where it would compromise the quality of our education or our experience there. How come you guys are turning Tufts down for construction? Did you talk to current students and find out that it is really going to be that bad or was our group more ready to buy a sugar coated answer that it will be fine?

Just seeing if I missed something in my understanding about the construction effects. 🙂

I don't think the administration is going to require all new students to pick up a hammer and start nailing drywall. The most annoying thing you'll probably have to do is take the stairs for the time period where they shut down two out of the four elevators to compensate for the additional floors. Unless you don't want increased clinic and lab space, how can you not like change?

During this time the there will be no simulation clinic (it is being destroyed for construction), and there will surely be disorganization. Once completed, however, tufts will be great."

I think this will lead a lot of prospective Tufts students to re-think their choices.

Why did you drop Tufts, just out of curiosity? Is it because living in NY is more convenient, or because of all the construction woes?

both actually. I dont want to spend an extra $100,000 on Tufts and then have to deal with any construction woes. Both schools have similar reputations, but NYU had the newer and nicer facilities. Plus, i get to stay in the greatest city in the world. 👍

Although I recently got in, I re-evaluated my choices and decided Temple is the best fit for me. Hopefully I made the right choice. No regrets!!!

Should I even go to my tufts? I have been to Temple and NYU. I thought Boston might be a cool place to live and study. Are Temple and NYU better places to be or is it just up to personal choice? FYI, I am from Florida so all options are distant and money really isn't an issue (navy scholarship).

After reading what everyone has been posting, I am seriously worried about whether Tufts will be able to handle it all. Adding 5 floors means making some major changes. I am sure everything has been planned out, but only time will tell whether everything works according to plan.
Also, with increasing floors comes increasing class size. By 2010, Tufts will have 220 incoming D1's, almost on par with NYU. I wonder how people will compare it to other schools, then.
Lets hope everything works out well. According to some online articles, the only thing students and patients should be worried about is using stairs instead of elevators, as our mod mentioned earlier.

I would not worry about class size as long as there are enough faculty around to help out. NYU had faculty all over the place supervising everything when i interviewed, and im sure Tufts will have to hire more faculty as well. There is nothing wrong with having large class sizes unless you need someone to hold your hand the entire way through.

True, but I'm not so concerned about faculty as such. I'm more concerned about being able to finish my graduation requirements, with such a huge class size. I don't want to spend an extra semester because of lack of clinical time (owing to a huge class size).
Hopefully, things will work out.

i agree with this too. while i'm not a current student there, i have interviewed and spoke with a few tufts students and they said there was no prob finding patients. tufts is probably one of the higher rated clinical schools in the northeast and being in downtown boston doesn't hurt either. for the class of 2012, i think the biggest hurdle will be taking the stairs for a year.....which i could care less. i take the stairs all the time.

The biggest complaint from what I was told is scheduling the seats not time spent on it. That's why they are doing the 5 floor expansion to give more seats. People don't have to wrestle as much with the scheduling.

I suppose thats an issue at almost every school, unless you go to one where you get your own chair for clinical years. No?

I'd really like to think of having to take the stairs as an added benefit.. I mean who has time to go to the gym in dental school on a regular basis anyway? ok... fine i'm an optimist, you got me.

I'm a 4th year at tufts and one of my biggest dislikes about this school is the difficulty in getting chair time. I have many patients, that isnt a problem at all, but fighting with other students in making appointments has been a big issue. The school simply doesnt have enough chairs in the clinic for our class size. This lack of chairs causes even more problems when gunners make crazy amounts of appointments and monopolize chair time.

I would agree with this post. With any sort of major construction, no matter how well planned, you can expect some unseen hurdles along the way. And yes, the class size will increase. And in terms of student:teacher ratio, currently I feel there arent enough instructors here right now.

Again, yes there is no problem finding patients. But once you find those needy patients, where are you going to seat them???

Most of the time people graduate on time here. Its not always easy, but you dont normally see someone spending an extra semester trying to graduate at tufts. I've seen a few spending an extra month or so, and 1 case where someone has spent a whole extra year. But that is rare.

Yup, MASSIVE construction. I was speaking with some fellow seniors, we're 4 months from graduation and we are all happy as clams to be out of here before this massive expansion takes place.

From what I've heard, first years will be without simulation clinic. What does that mean? It means you will still practice preps on plastic teeth, but not in the fancy sim clin on the 9th floor, you'll be doing it on the 8th floor preclinical lab, which is still acceptable, but not as realiistic as doing it in sim clin.

For me the cost difference btwn NYU and Tufts is about $100,000 less because i already live in NYC with my family, so i would only pay tuition and equipment, no rent or living expenses, and the other fees they charge that NYU does not.

It will be different, I don't doubt that. No stim clin. is not the end of the world. I believe there's talk about putting the stim clin heads in preclin or allowing them to use the clinic during non clinic hours. Either way Tufts is a great school with a great reputation and they won't do anything to jeopardize the integrity of the school. This construction is going to help us in the long run, especially ones planning on specializing since the post doc programs are going to be expanded. I'm not advocating that everyone should pick Tufts because we're the best in the nation, and that no one's better (bc we know other schools are just as good) I just don't want to see you guys make a decision based on the construction. Look at the big picture. If Tufts was your top choice because of whatever reason y then stick with it.

Please make a wise choice when you are choosing schools. Not choosing a school because of construction is lame, not picking a school because they were exposed for cheating..... that's a good reason. Do background checks on the schools...

I'm currently a first year dental student at Tufts. I love it! I see the vertical expansion as a purely positive thing. Yes, there will be some minor adjustments, like using stairs. In regards to the elevator situation, the dental school has four elevators, two of which will be down during the construction, however there are also seven other elevators that can be use via New England Medical Center, that several of my classmates used everyday. The plans for the construction look great! I'm excited to be able to see the finished project, although I'm not quite sure it'll be done on time. As far as class size goes, the D11s have been assured that the 2012 class is NOT going to be increased. The POSTDOCTORAL programs will increase their classes by approxamately 10 students. If anything, that news is great for those pre-docs interested in specializing at a great insitution! For those of you who are seriously worried about the construction's effect of your education here at Tufts, I suggest that you contact the admissions office or any students you've made contact with while at your interview. As cliche as it sounds, accepting a position in the 2011 class was one of the best decisions of my life. Don't count Tufts out, just because of the constuctions, especially if it's the right fit for you.

I am assuming you're being sarcastic when you say i'm optomistic about Tufts. Honestly I am not optomistic that construction will go un noticed. It will effect your daily life at Tufts. But yes I agree, you shouldn't reject Tufts just on that.

As for my complaints of the clinic, young naive D'11, you'll surely find that out for yourself in the coming years.

Clinic complaints happens in almost every school. With our situation, it has been recognized that we don't have enough chairs, hence the purpose of this vertical expansion. Construction is going to suck for the next 18-20 months, but after that, when they will be in their third year and ready for clinic, the improvements will help them by a tenfold, especially ones planning on specializing.

To clarify some information that our dear friend misconceived you all of. I spoke to the administrations today (since a bunch of people from my undergrad has been asking my questions) and here it is:

- pre doc classes will remain at 165-166 students (this has been mentioned during interviews)
- post doc student body will increase by 10 more per department
- instead of the stimulation clinic on the ninth floor you will be IN the 2nd floor clinic (which I think is better)
- # of clinic chairs increase

I hope that covers the basis of everyone's concerns. If you guys interviewed at other schools, you will see that many other schools have newly constructed buildings and that has not affected their students negatively, what makes you think this will?

I felt as a student at this school I just had to clear up some misconceptions. AGAIN CONTACT THE SCHOOL WITH QUESTIONS they are there for a reason. Don't rely on some guy on the web.

if a school is rude to you or doesn't really help you with your question then you should reevaluate the integrity of that school. At TUSDM, I'm sure you won't run into any such problems.
