Poll: four college seniors with unique personalities begin medical school this fall. Who is mostly likely to succeed? Multiple selections allowed.

Albert, a quiet type whose huge brain, knack for visualization and abstract thinking, and an uncanny ability to dissect even toughest written exams put him at the top of his class in a rigorous science curriculum in undergrad. He enjoys learning about anything in the natural sciences and learns quickly with high fidelity in retention. He's slightly awkward when it comes to girls and talking to different people in general. He'll teach you how to play panguingue if you want.

Brian, with average smarts but a big personality and genuine will to help people, can make friends with (or at least get along OK with) the grumpiest people. Even if doctors suddenly made zero money but only got food stamps, he would still stay because he's one of the few who's not in it for the lifestyle or cash. He's a bit gullible when it comes to practicalities, though. He's into origami and scherenschnitte.

Chris, who's roughed it since his days in a foster home as a kid, has always had a fierce sort of "bring it" attitude for every challenge he's encountered. His intellect is unremarkable but his determination is red hot, and he isn't afraid to make personal sacrifices to achieve his goals, be it cutting free time for extra studying or sucking up for a higher grade. Sometimes, he turns people off with his constant gunner attitude. His favorite place to hit the books is the backyard cortile.

David, a wise type who always looks both ways before crossing the street. His science and cognitive abilities are average, but he's an excellent planner and strategist, good at setting goals and achieving them with minimal effort. He deals with setbacks well and always has life in perspective, no matter how bad the situation is. Unfortunately, he can't stomach milk at all. Ask him about how savory his yosenabe recipe is instead.

No idea. But definitely not Steve who likes to make absurd, ridiculous poll while he should be out enjoying his last few months of freedom

This reminded me of Fallout for some reason.

Sounds like Albert might have macrocephaly, he should be screened for Cowden's disease or something, and a tinge of OCD.

Who is ready: the one who is most prepared to work the hardest.

Chris sounds like a douche. Then again, I don't think I've ever met a Chris that wasn't a douche.

albert will go into academics.

brian will goto an average residency, but be the best doctor.

Chris will be a workaholic surgeon with 5 divorces.

david will lose a leg in a tragic car accident, but he will be ok due to his ability to "deal with setbacks well"

I could see why you would say that. I wouldn't say it is a constant gunner attitude per say. I could him as trying to make up for his lack of intellect with determination to stay on equal footing with everyone else. That is my take and is basically a good reflection of how I am. Many people who don't understand would take it as a "gunner" mentality which is not necessarily true.

A gunner would say something along the lines of...
Classmate: So how did you do on that last exam?
Gunner: I did alright. Barely studied for it though.

However, gunner never revealed to classmate that gunner made a 100 on that exam. I've met many people like that.

I'm not sure who is prepared, but perhaps could we move them all into the same house and find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real?

I think it's important in the study of gunnerism to differentiate between a sniper and a gunner. A gunner often is quite obvious to spot- he studies in the library, asks questions in class, attends professor office hours, etc. He may or may not boast about his grade. A sniper is a gunner incognito. A sniper is the person who guns under the radar. He may study at home giving you the illusion that he doesn't study much. He may text people asking if they are going to x's party or x's bar, giving the illusion that he is going out. You cannot always spot a sniper, but he will spot you, and he will end you.

When I read this, I heard an evil laugh inside my head.

The Alberts do the best in the preclinical years and often get the best grades in the clinical years as well, due to the huge role of tests in grading and the fact that attendings are usually impressed by knowledge and reasoning abilities, rather than niceness.

Who will leave streaks behind in the toilet? Who will only wash 1/2 of the dirty dishes they create? Who will play porn without headphones?

:D

Am I the only one who had to look up "scherenschnitte", "panguingue", and "yosenabe"?
