So who is UCSD accepting? Not that I considered myself deserving of an outright acceptance, but I thought my interview went very well and the interviewer told me he really liked my application.

Do they put everyone on this "acceptable pool" or has anyone been out-right rejected post interview?

I think they're offering acceptances to Amy Chow and other olympic gold medalists and phenomenal applicants that in all honesty proabably will not be matriculating at UCSD.

I'm replying to my own post (kinda pathetic!). Anyway, for those interested, I just heard back from admissions, I was told that 80-90% of those interviewed are put on the acceptable pool! Of course, the other 10-20% would be those with an outright acceptance. It appears that there are no outright rejections initally following the interview, if so, they must be a very very small amount.

In short, an acceptance pool spot is nothing to get too happy about, eventhough they say that a majority of the people are offered an acceptance off the list. It's their cruel and inconsiderate way to make sure they have people to fill the class in the case they're turned down by the students they do offer acceptances to.

Also, there won't be any significant movement until May 15th. That really has to be a brutal wait.

Thanks for the info jmejia1! It is indeed a brutal wait... *twiddling my thumbs* 🙁

Good luck to all of us waiting and wading in this pool! 😀

hey jmejia1! LOL you remember my amy chow post? hehe

anyways, i can't say anything since i don't know anything about anything still.

but good luck fellas! hope some of you end up as my classmates in san diego!

for what it's worth, i just got a letter dated 3-1-02 stating that i had been placed in the acceptable pool, ARGHHHHHHH!! regarding rejects, i was told on interview day that "some" would get outright rejects, some acceptances, but most would land in the dreaded acceptable pool.

hey hey... I am no olympian, nor have I done relief work in a third world country in my spare time, and they let me in 😕 who knows whats up with them.. but hopefully they will get their act together and get some acceptance letters out to the "acceptable pool" in the near future 😀 Don't give up hope, Dean Resnick said he personally goes over each persons app when they are placed in the acceptable pool (he sounded sincere), and that they do pull a good number of people from that pool later on in the season.

My interview went well. I worked my a** off during my undergraduate years, I'm a second-time applicant, and I engaged in extracurricular activities that showed my passion for medicine. I deserve an outright acceptance, but I'm very unsure I'll get one.

My point is this. It all comes down to fate. Despite how I may feel about my application, I realize a lot of it just comes down to what is in your stars. I wish everyone the best of luck and maybe if some of us are accepted we will see other at school. Keep up the hope and best of luck. Your chances are as good as flipping a quarter: 50%.

Hey Jessica, thanks for the encouraging words. But I'm not surprised that you were accepted to UCSD, especially given your other much more impressive acceptances and interviews. Obviously, you're among those highly recruited applicants that schools like San Diego cross thier fingers in hopes that you'll matriculate in thier school.

And as I mentioned, highly sought out students like you, almost always turn UCSD down for schools like UCSF, Stanford,UCLA. That's why San Diego literally puts everyone else on the acceptable pool. San Diego should be a little more considerate and make the acceptable pool less inclusive.

For jmejia1:
I interviewed mid-december and received the acceptance notice via email on early January of 2002. My stats are: 3.89 science, 3.9 overall.
MCAT: V9, P11, B10. I have done research for over 2 years, volunteered in clinics, etc, etc, and the usual premed stuff. I strongly believe that I was accepted because of my autobiography for their secondary. They must really like something about me conveyed in my autobiography. And interviews were not that great either. The interviewers neither gave any positive or negative feedback. So it must be the secondary.

For matthew0126: Wow, I hope to see you at UCSD too. It would be great to have such intelligent and nice people like yourself as a classmate, debunking the whole UCSD myth. By the way, looking for a roommate at UCSD Coast apartments? 🙂

For Jessica: Jessica, I think that luck has nothing to do with you getting accepted to UCSD. I have heard your interviews at great schools (and also your acceptance at UCSF). You are doing something right for all of these schools to offer your interviews and acceptances. But, I don't think luck has anything to do with your situation. It's raw talent 🙂

Good luck to all UCSD hopefuls.

I interviewed in early Dec., and was put in the "Acceptable Pool" about 2 weeks later. Tonight I got an email from Dr. Resnik that says to call him so they can "share some news about my application with me". A bit late now to call, but I have my fingers crossed...

Strider

Well, congrats strider. I got that e-mail from Dean Resnick last Monday and it was an acceptance!

and thanks for the compliments guys, but I just don't see myself as radically different from any other pre-med. We all work really hard and do tons of interesting stuff, I was just saying that I didn't think UCSD was looking for "super-applicants" only.

But in any case, I am declining my acceptance there.... so that will dry up the pool a little bit.

Jessica did Dr. Resnick ask you to call regarding your application? Or did he just say congrats you've been accepted in the email? I received an email from him saying that they have some 'news' to share with me about my application.

Congrats strider...Yes indeed an email from Dr. Resnik telling you to call them means an acceptance. I guess this is proof that those on the acceptable pool do have a good chance.

UCLA2000 - It was a really short e-mail. All that it said was "please call the admissions office at ###-###-####, we have some news regarding you application." and it was from Dr. Resnick. I didn't get a phone call.

If it was sent today (or on a Mon.) then it is most likely an acceptance (they do their acceptance phone calls/e-mails on Mondays)

so, congrats to you too!

Yes, UCLA2000 if you receive an email from Dr. Resnik telling you to call them back concerning "some news to share" with you then it means acceptance. Have you been accepted to any other Cali schools? If so, have you decided which one you will matriculate?

Yes I was lucky enough to get accepted to UCLA and I'm on the high priority list at UCSF. If at all possible I'd like to go to the east coast for med school. I'm hoping for Penn.

I hold one acceptance thus far, but as soon as I get one that I like more, I'll be withdrawning from that school to lessen the wait for others.

Financial aid will play a big role in my choice of medical schools.

I'm not putting UCSD down because obviously it holds its own ground and I would love to attend there, but how many people will turn UCSF or UCLA down for San Diego even if San Diego offers a half-ride scholarship? I know a guy that was offered a half-ride at UCSD and decided to matriculate at UCLA/Charles Drew with no matching scholarship.

Resnick as well implied that UCSD doesn't "sweeten the pot" because UC tuition is already "cheap".

As for me, the school I hold an acceptance is an out-of-state, so for damn sure if I get word from any UC, I'll be withdrawing from that school within a couple days and allow someone else to get an early phone call.

jmejia1 -- why keep putting down ucsd? sure, it's not ucsf, but it's ranked right around 20th, the new curriculum is kick-ass, it's in my opinion, in the most desirable location in the continental u.s., and did you check out their financial aid? the average debt for their students is only $60-thousand some (which is like $10-20k less than other publics)

anyways, i agree that ucla and ucsf are "better," -- i'm waiting on them myself. but ucsd is pretty damn great already.

okay i didn't read your last post. hahehe. i won't delete my post tho, since i think i make some valid points in there

congrats every1 that got the good news!

hey cambrian! hehe isn't it exciting that we are gonna be in san diego (well maybe anyways 😀 ). where are you from?

i'm from so. cali originally... finishing up school here @ berkeley. i'm real pumped about san diego. it's my 2nd choice, so i'm not 100% sure i'll end up there (still waiting on ucla's decision, and was waiting on ucsf but they rejected me post-interview, dagh! hehe). but i'm definitely turning down all privates

did you apply for housing yet? i just sent off my my request for a housing app

As you noticed, I clearly write that my intention is not to put UCSD down because I completely unerstand it's a top-notch school. My only observation was that many students that gain admission to the other more highly ranked UCs eventually do not matriculate at UCSD and that UCSD in a sense knows this yet still raises it bar to only later email or call those tormented for months on the acceptable pool.

No offense to those planning to matricualte at UCSD, it's something to be very proud of, and trust me I would be buying a UCSD T-shirt even before returning Resnicks call to show my pride.
