Just a thread for kicks!

I really respect/look up to Dr. Quinn of USC (i dont know if he's still working there). My grandma had cancer a few years back and he did everything in his power to help, was very assertive, and just there for the family at all times (called my mom to update her on his lunch breaks when he could've been enjoying his well-deserved break, and much more)...was just one of those doctors that actually cared alot and would always be there for his patients.

He's one of my biggest inspirations to date.

I don't really have "idols"....med-related or beyond. I see some nice qualities in many people, but I've never really understood the whole concept of an idol or role model.

I have some, but they're "hippy"/progressive doctors and rather prone to getting flamed here (and the other ones aren't famous) you know who you are.

that's great to hear btw.

really? can you name a few n how they have influenced you? I think its great to hear about other perspectives - its how we all learn more =]. who cares if it gets flamed if its important to you 👍. we have too many flamers on here anyways (get it? haha)

Dr Schwab at Penn trauma. He kind of invented damage control.

Also at Penn, Dr Adzick (fetal surgery) and Dr Kaplan (FOP aka person-turning-into-stone disease, it really does exist outside of Grey's Anatomy). Adzick because he's an unapologetic badass who invented a field and Kaplan because he obviously cares SO MUCH about all of his patients (which are essentially everyone with FOP).

I think you can tell where I go to med school.

Not an idol- I dont' believe in having idols but...

I really love Dr. Ben Carson the neurologist... his story is very inspirational. I also love studying medical missionaries. oh any doctor that will let me shadow them- lol!

Are you doing your EM rotation now that you know Adzick? Just asking cuz I'm in there on Saturday nights milling around doing whatever I can as a lowly volunteer.

I thought you were going to say Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and I got really excited for a minute...🙁

maybe we are...my Dr. Quinn's dayjob might be different than yours' nighttime job 😉

My former doctor (pediatrician) is definately one of my inspirations in me going into medicine. His kindness, patience, compassion, ability to communicate and explain things clearly even for a kid is outstanding.

I must be dyslexic, because everytime I read a post in this thread with this Dr.'s surname, I swear I'm seeing Azdick. Poor guy, I'm sure I'm not the only person who's every glanced and thought that was his name.

Dr Hannibal Lecter is an obvious choice; by far the greatest manipulator of people ever.

Which brings me to an off-topic question: who would win in a battle of words to try and trap the other person into a fallacious argument? Great psychiatrist vs. great lawyer/politician?

I envy you for having had positive experiences with your pediatrician. Mine had a thick Filipino accent, and I swore he was 90 years old. Scared the **** out of me everytime I had to go there. I think my mother said I vomited on him the first time I met him. I subsequently urinated or vomited on him at many a future meetings with him. I saw him at Stabuck's the other day and emptied my $8 Latte all over his cardigan sweater.

Two people: Arthur Caplan, Bioethicist at Penn. And obviously:

Paul Farmer

HAHAHA excellent find, comrade. How interesting he got his PhD from my undergrad institution... I kid you not about this, a couple of years ago we completed construction of the "Wang Center." It's an Asian themed place with food and chapel-like meditation rooms funded by Charles Wang (Computer Associates).

Wang.

Just had to throw it in there one more time 👍

Hopkin's Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa.

The man hopped a fence from Mexico to America, picked fruits, married and American girl, transferred from crappy community college to Berkeley, got in Harvard Med, and is now a neurosurgery professor at JHU?

Yeah.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta. I am stunned that I haven't heard this name yet.

Dr. Nick Riviera.

"The most rewarding part was when he gave me my money."

Dr. Barth Green is the shiznit!
In case no one know who he is, the neurosurgeon that is consulting the doctor that operated on the Bill's player, the one that said he would walk again... thats him. He pretty much is credited with bringing back some stable form of health care in haiti through the group he founded; project medishare (with two other doctors). He also founded the miami project which is like the biggest paralysis research and treatment center in the world...
and on top of that he is an awesome neurosurgeon and is just one of the nicest doctors and human beings in the world

yea i wanna be dr. green lol

Yeah, I agree here, I got to meet him a couple of years back and not only is his story inspirational, but he is so down to earth! Definately an awesome person.

BEN CARSON......His son is my really close friend and former housemate so I got to meet him. He's really down to earth.

Dr. Perry Cox.

Never met someone as dedicated to small tasks as he is.

ie. calling J.D. a girl's name for the entire time.

DR. COX!!!! best doctor + attitude!

definitely Dr. Barry Marshall (2005 Nobel Prize co-winner for Medicine)

He drank a petri dish full of bacteria to prove that bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) caused ulcers and not stress, spicy foods, and acid.

He's got nerve to just flat out drink a coctail of bacteria!!!

not my "idol", but CDR Jadick is definitely a doctor that I would like to meet.

Robert Sapolsky (MacArthur Genius Award winner, neurologist whose work correlates stress with decreased immune function) and Thomas Starzl (solid organ transplant efficacy has him to thank )

Dr. Nick Gideonse at OHSU.

Dr. Michael DeBakey

Same goes here for my pediatrician.

Dr. Christian Troy ... is a god. 👍

Also, Dr. Cox for sure, and (I'll probably get nailed for this one) Dr. Will Kirby. I liked him on big brother ... I can't help but watch him on Dr. 90210 now.

Dr Carson may be a cool guy but he probably wouldn't be too happy that you think he's a neurologist. He's a neurosurgeon. Just a little different...

Dr. John Dorian. He goes the extra mile for his patients. 👍
