for 4th year audition rotations, who makes the decision to let you rotate there or not? i am a 1st year DO student who is hoping to get an audition rotation at some top MD programs. aside from doing super well on my boards, would it benefit me to do research this summer with faculty at one of the programs? would they be able to put in a good word for me or am i wasting my time? is it more just based on having space available and awesome board scores?

thanks!

My experience is very limited in this (also I am MD), but I don't think its that difficult to get away rotations. Just apply early and have all the required administrative hoops ready as early as you can (some places require a background check, urine tox screen, etc). I've very rarely heard of a place rejecting an application for an away if they had space for a student. Except one of the really big name places (starts with H). Maybe it's different for a DO student rotating through an MD program though. But I imagine you would be rotating through a place that has a history of taking DO students for residency, so they shouldn't be too prejudiced against DOs.

Agreed.

The vast majority of away rotations have nothing to do with aptitude; they are filled in a relatively first-come/first-serve fashion by the program secretaries or the med school registrar's office.

That being said, I saw a lot of schools that had different requirements/eligibilities for DOs and IMGs.

It's school dependent, but almost all are on a first come first serve basis. Also, you should research where you're doing your rotation because for some specialties an away rotation does not always result in an interview.

If an away rotation of interest is on VSAS, when is the soonest one can apply?

According to their website - "On February 3, 2011, VSAS will be updated to include all host institutions offering 2011-2012 electives through this online service. PLEASE NOTE: Each host institution will make their electives available for application on a date of their choosing. You may review those host-specific application dates through your "Institutions" tab."

This is consistent with what my school told me - we can 1st get our VSAS authorization/log-ins on Feb 3rd.

In terms of actually applying it's very dependent on the school - https://services.aamc.org/20/vsas/public/schools/

Earliest I've seen is March 1st, most are April or May
