I'm applying to a really excellent-looking program for career-changers out of school for a few years (pretty much perfect for me). They've agreed to take the bulk of my application now, and accept letters of rec and transcripts as they become available. They want three LORs.
So far, I am planning to get letters from:
* An MD friend/ mentor-type who was also a non-trad student back in the day, and has helped me a lot as I've come around to my decision.
* One of the faculty in the program where I graduated from my BA (as required by the Post-Bac I'm applying to). I've written my former UG advisor, the former Dept. Chair, and a favorite prof who knew me fairly well. Whomever writes back first and/or most warmly will be tapped.
...And then, for Letter #3, I have a choice.
Currently, I have a day job and also work PT as a tech in the local county ER. So:
* I've been here long enough that my boss the nurse manager could write something totally competent.
* The clinical educator, also a well-respected RN, knows me a little better and might have some good comments.
* One of the other senior RNs has known me since I trained as a volunteer, and might have good comments on my dedication and verve.
* And I'm friendly with a few of the residents. A couple of the staff docs know my name, but I doubt any of them would be able to come up with much that's specific.
So whom should I tap at the hospital? I would think the goal would be clarity and specificity about my blossoming talents for healthcare, so I lean toward the RNs because they've seen me do more and known me longer. But if I spend another couple of shifts nerding out with the G1 guy I always seem to work with, or the G3 who's already given me a little advice, maybe one of them would be willing to write something up.
Ideas/ comments/ suggestions?
