It's a bit silly, but who normally attends your white coat ceremony? I know most people invite there family and significant other. Is it appropriate to invite friends? Did you?

Would I look awkward if I only had family attend and no friends?

I think? that spots are limited so you only have a few tickets. Could be wrong though.

If you don't mind, I can attend with a few other SDN members.

In all seriousness, there's nothing wrong in having only family attend. Some people attend the ceremony all by themselves (with no family and friends) 😱

That must be so depressing. 🙁

Your location says "El Paso," assuming you are matriculating in TX, I may be able to take an early morning flight. Send me the deets. :naughty:

That sucks 🙁. But I guess that happens a lot with people who don't attend an in-state school? Plane tickets are expensive!

My white coat ceremony didn't have a max # (so there were people sitting on the steps of the large auditorium) and I had 3 family members attend. Most people had family, some had close friends, a few unfortunately didn't have anyone because their families lived so far away. Really, no one will know who is there for you unless you tell them, so I don't see why it would be awkward to have only family and no friends.

Of course, this is all school-dependent, as I'm assuming some schools will only let you have a certain number of people. I don't see how they can tell you not to invite friends, though.

Is a white coat ceremony similar to a graduation in that they call you individually and hand you a coat or they don you collectively?

It probably depends on the school? I think at the school I'm going to attend they call a few names at a time. As you go up on stage the doc puts your white coat on you and you stay up there until your whole group has recieved their coat.

AHH....I've been waiting for my white coat my whole life! Excited! I'm going to take so many pictures and FB and instagram them!

You've already committed to coming to mine.

It will depend on the school, but each person will be recognized and someone physically puts the coat on you. At mine, we were called up on stage in groups of 3, and on stage there were 3 doctors paired with MS4s. The 4th years handed the coat to the doctor, who put the coat on for us. Very much like a "passage of the baton." Then we got a free mug 😀 and recited the Hippocratic oath.

Damn man, everytime you talk I want to go to pitt that much more. I hope you do tours, interviews, something.

Yes, very similar to a graduation (speeches about how great everyone is, how everyone is going to be the best doctor, the white coat thing given individually (at my school at least), and other stuff depending on your school of course). Some schools will limit the number of people you can invite, so don't invite anyone until you know the details. They'll send out invitations in most cases. Or you can always contact the admissions office and find out early if you've decided on a school already.

Let me guess, do you guys also have problems going to restaurants, movies, and bars by yourself?

Because it sure sounds like it.

Indeed. I'm trying to go to as many white coat ceremonies as possible.

I don't know about La Presse, but I always try to take an opportunity of going to a white coat ceremony whenever I get the chance.
