hi,

for all those who went to berkeley, how do you fill out the secondaries that asak you to list your courses. i am having trouble with the chem req as all schools want a year of Gen chem

the career center says to list 1a/3a as g chem and 3b/mcb 102 as o-chem.

however, for tulane's secondary, it asks for 6 sem hours of each g chem, ochem, bio, phys... so do you just write 8 sem hours when they ask for how many hours?

for dartmouth, they ask for 8 sem hours of all the sciences. and the career center said that dartmouth is filled out differnetly bc you say chem 1a for the full year of gen chem and 3a/3b for o cehm. so when dartmouth asks semester hours of gen chem, do you write 4 (which is just chem 1a) or 8 (bc the career cneter says our gen chem is considered a year for dartmouth)

please advise, so confused!!!!!!!!!!!

What you should do is when they ask for 2 semesters of gchem and 2 of ochem, put chem 1a, chem 3a as your gchem requirements. For the 2 semesters of ochem, list chem 3b and mcb 102 (or whatever biochem class you took...the only other one i know of is mcb 100).

For your darmouth question, I'm kind of confused. If they are asking for 8 hours of each gchem and ochem, you should do what I wrote in the previous paragraph.

In the case of tulane, again just do as I said in the first paragraph. That way you will exceed their requirements. The career center has it on their website that you should list chem 1a, chem 3a as your gchem and that no med school has ever had a problem with this (one med school did after a person was accepted but the career center explained it to that school and everything worked out fine).

Good luck with your apps!

speaking of dartmouth, can you guys give me a link to their secondary? Left the snail mail at home.

on the UCI application, they want you to list a year of gen chem, a year of organic chem, and an additional semester of molecular biology.

i'm considering using mcb 130, 165 or 160 for the additional semester of molecular biology- would any of these work?

Ya, any mcb class will work (it's in the name...molecular cell biology)

sweet. here i was thinking that i somehow forgot to take chem 1b.

thanks guys, and lakerfan:

when tulane asks for semster hours, do i just put 8, instead of the required 6?

as for dartmouth: do I put 8 semester hours of gen chem since the career center said for dartmouth, chem 1a is all your gen chem req and 3a/3b is o-chem. (you do this bc they do not consider mcb 102 as o-chem) or do I put 4 hours since chem 1a is only 4 units????????????????????????

quote from dartouth:
"We require one year each (8 semester hours) of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry (note: Biochemistry may not be substituted for Organic Chemistry), Physics, and General Biology, plus one-half year (3 semester hours) of Calculus."

Hey lakersfan...maybe you'll be able to answer this question. I'm using MCB 135K (3 units) for the extra semester of bio...so I have 3 semesters, but it's only 11 units (as opposed to the 12 that they ask for). Any idea if that's sufficient? I think I should call up the admissions office and ask tomorrow...

Hurray for UC Berkeley
Go Bears!

Speaking of Berkeley, I haven't really looked into it yet but do we have a pre-med board that writes LOR's for us? Or is our only option professors?

Hmm, I really don't know. What school is this for? I take it you majored in something other than MCB so you only took bio 1a, 1b and mcb 135k. Maybe you could write down MCB 102 again? (It really depends on the school you are applying too...some are more lax with their requirements).

We don't (so don't check the committee letter on any of your apps). Generally, you need 2 science letters and 1 humanities letter. That should satisfy the requirements for most schools.

Edit: have your professors send your letters to the career center which will then forward your packet of letters to each school that you request

I was referring to UC Irvine specifically, with its 3 semester / 12 units requirement. I've taken 1A, 1B, 102, and 135K. 102's already counting twice, as chem and biochem, so I probably shouldn't count it twice. As is, though, with 1A, 1B, and 135K, that's just 11 units, even though it is 3 semesters of bio. I'm kinda worried if that'll do. And yeah...I'm an English major.

i went to cal.. but for grad school. so im no help 😛

Doesn't the FAQ from career center address this irvine issue? I think the letter services has been around long enough to whip all the med schools into learning our way or the high way.

The Career Center FAQ says to list MCB 102 twice; once for biochem, and once for ochem, but it doesn't have anything to say about the additional semester of biology requirement...I just want to make sure my 3 semesters with 11 units are ok, even though UCI says they want 3 semesters with 12 units.

Hey WayChanger, I'm really not sure. It would really suck if that one course held you up. What I would do is contact UCI and ask them if you to have it done by now or by the time you matriculate. If it is just by when you matriculate, then take some 2 unit mcb class (I know there arent too many) if you do decide to go to UCI.

In the secondary, it says that it is by the time you graduate. I think I'll just take IB 131 (I hear it's cake) so I don't have to worry about it...
