Who's applying for entering class 2004?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey soonerpillow and dw--thanks for your help. it's been a while since i checked this thread....sorry about my lor confusion. i talked to my premed advisor and of course dw is right--no involvement with the amcas app. BUT this is what my premed advisor said: for certain schools you can go ahead and send the letters right after submitting your primary. then the med school keeps it on file until they receive your secondary....for other cases though (i.e. ucsf) only certain people are "invited" to complete the secondary, which means you send everything together.

what my premed advisor will do: I give her a set of mailing labels and instructions on when and where I want each set of recs to be sent out. In her little advisor book (that supposedly all advisors get from the aamc) my advisor will look up all the schools I'm applying to, and see which ones need what type of recommendations (i.e. some need 2 science, 1 non-science, others want 1 work-related, etc.). She then sifts through my file and puts the right ones in. I know, I am really grateful...benefits of a small liberal arts college??

hey soonerpillow (and anyone else) if you guys feel as though your premed committee isn't that informative, feel free to ask me...i usually get in touch with my premed advisor frequently and she's very knowledgeable. i can field your questions her way...

anyway, i guess i'll wait for my scores and then send my amcas app out. not that it's anywhere near completion yet....

btw, doesn't amcas automatically send your scores to the schools you designate? so...how would a school know you submitted an app before receiving your mcat score??

all right, back to the grind....

hey, I'm applying in this cycle, too.

I was thinking it might be cool if people added what schools they are applying to, since it might help identify people you'll be talking to as you move along in the process...?

so here are mine: UVA, EVMS, MCV, GW, Dartmouth, Yale, UPenn, URochester, Pitt, Cornell, Baylor

anyone else got some of the same? I guess if you haven't gotten MCAT scores back yet, it might be hard... But once you know, add 'em!

Hello! I will be applying with the rest of yall!

Who thinks its unfair that AMCAS makes the first day you can send off your application BEFORE the april folks even get a chance to see their score? What takes them so damn long to grade the things anyway? First of all their scantron, secondly its not like they actually read the essays. Its more like scanning them for decent content and structure. Sorry, I'm slightly bitter.

On a serious note, do any of you know if a letter from a bioengineering faculty member counts as a science LOR?

Yeah not having the scores before applying is a little unnerving. I have a theory, I bet the essays can't be checked till June because they might have to get a large group of people (teachers) who are working and have to wait till school is out. Who knows though.

I have a question... for the UCs there is a separate UC application that needs to be sent out correct? when do/should we fill that out, or do we first need to be "invited" to fill that out?

just so you guys don't get confused, just look at my sig and you'll see i'm the same person who started this thread. ironically, i'm going to now pull myself out of this club/thread...i have gave it a great deal of thought and have decided to take my MCATs this august and apply next year for very many important reasons.

i want to wish you guys ALL the luck 👍, and hopefully all of you will get in and none of you will have to end up applying again with me next year...

best of luck to you guys!

I'm sorry to hear that. It would've been cool applying with you, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck to you, too!

Count me in. I just submitted AMCAS on 6/26. Submitted to 16 schools and will also be applying to Columbia. I live in NYC and am applying to mostly area schools.

There is no separate application for the UCs this year. They finally got their act together.

Hey guys, i'm actually confused...i'm practically done with the AMCAS application, but i'm having trouble selecting some schools, I have a 3.48 gpa, 26/28 mcat scores (took it twice), significant research experience (am taking the year off cuz i've already graduated), from duke...and just other jazz in terms of clinical volunteer experience, religious groups and community service etc

I don't know where I should apply to or how to look up such information, i mean i try to go to random websites of med schools but i don't find much useful info...since i'm in the NC area, the only ones i've applied to are regional schools like NC and SC schools alongside GA's Emory, Albany Medical College...again quite a few of the colleges i'm choosing to apply to seem kind of random based on mcat score,s GPA stuff etc, does anyone else have specific detailed advice, thoughts or anything on where I should apply or where I can find such info cuz i found the MSAR kinda useless here...

Does anyone have any ideas or any thoughts on where else I should apply or where I should look cuz i want to submit this application by the first week of july, i have about 8 schools thus far. Some help would be much appreciated, like how did you guys select ur schools?

last but not least, for the post secondary experiences descriptions, exactly what should we be writing there? Should we be describing specifically what each experience was and our role in them or should i also include what i learned and how it was helpful bla bla

thanks a ton and best of luck with apps to all...

Hi Echo

Here's my 2 cents. About selecting schools - I think picking them based on average gpas/mcats is not the way to go. Think about what you're looking for in a school - do you need a "tradtional" med school or a more progressive one? What kind of student body tends to go that school? Location? Alot of other things that youcan't find out just from a web site. I would seek out current students if possible. I personally chose schools mostly based on location (near NYC) and most of the schools I picked were similar in terms of how innovative their curriculum, diverse student body, and schedule flexibility. Then, pick a range of schools to apply to.

For Post Sec experiences, I usually described what it was, what my role was and what I learned if I had space.

I'm not sure so dont quote me on it, but I think u can add more schools along the way?

Count me in too. I submitted 6/5 and designated close to 20 schools. I have all my LORs, except my non-science letter. My professor is MIA, can't get a hold of him. And some schools like NYMC and FSU don't consider a math a non-sci, so gotta get another from a french teacher. Are we having fun yet?
Good luck to all!

Hi all,

I'm applying this summer too! Submitted AMCAS 6/5, but it didn't become active until 6/17 ... still waiting for it to get verified. Is it just me, or is this verification process ghastly? I can't stand waiting for four to six weeks before the schools get the app, and then waiting while they process it and decide to send secondaries! I wish this whole process could move quicker ...

Hey Guys!!

I sent my application in on the 24th.... so I'm in the boat with the rest of you. Anyone else applying to schools in the NY/NJ/PA region? It'll be cool to see you guys at interviews...

hey guys, i never noted this awesome thread till it got bumped up today.

count me in the ranks of applying to med schools for the 2004 cycle. i bit the bullet and turned in amcas early on june 5th, without receiving my april mcat scores. i'm still thanking the big guy in the sky that everything worked out in that respect. now that i'm knee-deep into the application cycle, there's no turning back.

so let's get ready; this is going to be a hella adventurous ride this coming year.

good luck to all 🙂

Sup everyone,

Submitted 6/25. Hopefully this long, painful road has some high points to look forward to and not a 'freight train at the end of the tunnel'. 😉

Out of curiousity, anyone know how long it takes for the verification process to be complete when they have recieved all the transcripts? Im already starting to check AMCAS for any changes and its only been 4 days.

Since the process is such a crapshoot, HOPE EVERYONE HAS SOME SERIOUS GOOD LUCK VIBES emanating-- maybe we'll end up with early interviews and hopefully acceptances so we wont be strung around for a whole year!!!

Goodluck ya'll.

Count me in, although I wanted to submit tonight but AMCAS is on the fritz.

Hey MissBonnie and quideam - I'm also applying to schools in the tri-state area. Including Columbia, NYU, NYCOM and NJCOM I've got 20 schools. So much for paying off my credit cards.

GOOD LUCK everyone!!!!

Little hand says it's time to rock and roll! Fall 2004 will be here in no time. Good luck to all of you.

I know a while back some of us posted schools we were going to apply to, but now that some of us have actually submitted and we have our MCAT scores back, "the list" should be about finalized. Anybody want to post their finalized list of where they are applying? I guess I'll start (in geographical order):

The University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner, baby!!!)
UT-SW (it was painful, but I did it)
Baylor
St. Louis U.
U. Chicago
Northwestern
Cincinnati
Pittsburgh
Penn
Duke
Johns Hopkins
Cornell
Harvard
Stanford
UCSF

So that makes 15 for me. About average. Now that I look at it, it seems kind of top heavy, but I didn't want to apply to too many schools that I wouldn't go to if I got into OU.

Recently added a few and now I am up to 20:

Albany Medical College
New York Medical College
Einstein
Columbia
Mt. Sinai
Cornell
NYU
SUNY Downstate
SUNY Upstate
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Stony Brook
NYCOM
NJ - Newark
RWJ
NJ SOM
Penn
Temple
Drexel
Jefferson
Yale

I'm also applying this cycle. I would put up the list of schools I'm applying to, but my indecisiveness has made me apply to a million schools... I submitted on June 3.

Off to Ecuador!

Sachin

Here's my list it's at 18.

Stanford
USC
Tulane School of Medicine
Yale
Harvard Medical School
Boston Univ.
UMDNJ--New Jersey Medical School
UMDNJ--Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
Weill Medical College of Cornell University
Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University
SUNY -- Downstate in Brooklyn
SUNY -- Stonybrook
SUNY -- Buffalo
Rochester
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
NYU

oh just wondering, who else on this thread/applying for 2004 has taken off a few years? I graduated college in '99, so it's been 4 now. yikes. seems to have gone by so fast and at the same time I feel that I've been out of school forever.

-bonnie

I've also been out for a few years. I graduated after fall 97.

hey guys...class of '04 here. hoping senior year flies by. here are my applied-to schools:

UVA
EVMS
MCV
GW
G'town
Vanderbilt
WF
Duke
Emory
MUSC
USC

best of luck to everyone as applications are starting to be forwarded to the schools today!

Applying for 04 as well.
Just submitted my AMCAS yesterday! I feel so far behind the rest of you!
Getting psyched for secondaries!!!!!
Let us all know how y'all are doing, how secondaries are going, etc.
Thanks and good luck!
You've all made it this far, and have bright futures ahead!!

Hi everybody,
I'm also applying for Fall 2004. Submitted maybe 2 days after MCAT scores came in. So here is where I'm applying... Still thinking about others/more.

SUNY Downstate
SUNY Stonybrook
Albert Einstein
Mount Sinai
NYU
Cornell
(maybe Columbia... but I'm not sure)
U. Penn
Baylor
UCSF
Stanford

I'm sorta in the same boat as soonerpillow because I don't want to apply to schools that I know I wouldn't choose over Stonybrook (my cheaper state school). But my list is kinda "top heavy" and being that there are no such things as "safety schools" when applying, I'm wondering whether I should apply to some more less selective schools. (3.97 GPA, 34Q, U. Penn?)

Money is an issue for me since I'm paying the app fees myself and since most schools send back a secondary to everybody who applies, I've already racked up 1000+ dollars (at 100 dollars per secondary). And I thought the MCATS where expensive!

If you are looking for some less selective schools (with stats below yours), have you thought about Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregeon, Colorado?

Your stats are awesome - schools will be vying for you!
Great job!

I also applied on June 3rd and was told a few days ago that the app would be submitted to all of my schools today (July 1). I keep checking it, but it hasn't been yet. I know I'm not the only one obsessed with the AAMC website!

Miss Bonnie, I also graduated in 99', hopefully this "maturity" will work in our favor:clap:

p.s. I applied to 24 schools, I feel crazy telling people that, but one of them has to let me in right??

Yeah, I was gonna apply to Colorado, too...then I saw what their out of state tuition was...$60,000/year. 😱

i'm also applying to 24 schools.....i figure it's better to apply to too many than not enough!

YES, hopefully we will be getting multiple acceptances. I stay more sane if I stay positve.🙂

what up guys. im applyin for fall 2004. im still tryin to finalize my list of schools. im a ny state resident. and was wondering if any of you know some schools that have lesser acceptance stats. i know this has been asked before, but still. also any friendly out of state schools would be helpful too. thanks

Count me in too. I submitted 6/5, but no transmittal date either. I've got 18 schools on my list. Thinking about adding Penn State too, but not sure....any thoughts? I am not a Pennsylvania resident though. I've checked their stats on their website, but I remember reading on one of the threads that it's pretty tough to get in from out-of state.

i applied to 17 schools and submitted it june 3rd also. still waiting on my first secondary, but i guess we all are. im looking all up and down the east coast with the lone exception of USC (how great would it be to live with all those CA girls at USC). anyhow, good luck to everyone and let me know if you guys have any of the secondary questions for georgetown or emory cause i would like to have it ready to go as soon as possible.

Hi everyone,
now that we're posting the list of schools, thought I'd add my final list in....

Duke (my #1 choice!)
UCSF (tied for #1, but I know it's nearly impossible..)
Stanford
UTSW
All Texas schools
Baylor (#2)
Vandy
Tulane
Emory
U Penn
U Mich
Johns Hopkins
Wash U
Possibly Columbia

Sigh...it is indeed top heavy, but since there's no thing as a safety school, I figure I'll get in either in Texas and/or one of my other dream schools. I figure there's no point in applying somewhere else "just to get in"--I really want to go if I'm accepted.

By the way, for the person who's "waiting" for secondaries, did you know that for many schools, they are already online and it's up to us to fill 'em out? (Baylor, Tulane, Vandy, JHU...among others)

Good luck!

s'pose i should put on my list now that its finalized.

Harvard
JHU
UCSF
UPenn
UPitt
UMich
Cornell
(I can hope, right?)
MSU
Wayne State
SUNYx4

::crossing fingers, toes, eyes, and whatever else may help::

I believe that Vanderbilt invites you to an interview BEFORE they want you to fill out their secondary. Apparently UNC Chapel Hill is the same way.

Good luck all 🙂

IM A 2004 APPLICANT:clap:

damn 2003+pissed+ im not even 22 yet for a year
