Its a good school and the scandal was a loophole in the system that has been rectified. I don't see how that one time event sould hinder a students decision to attend.

From my personal experiences and living in tristate area,,

UMDNJ should be your last choice...

yes i am def. going, sent my deposit in immediately!

my screen name is neocast128 if you wanna chat it up about next year

and to all the haters, umdnj is a great school that gives a great clinical education even if it is in a crummy area, means more patients!

I'm probably going to turn down the UMDNJ offer. Great clinical but I wanted a better research reputation. So if anyone really wants UMDNJ, a spot will open soon.

Um i been living in the tristate area my whole life.. and newark like 3 times aw week ..so don't say "UMNDJ should be your last choice"
I think for me UMDNJ is the best school for what i want to do.

i'll be attending. i fell in love with the staff, students and facilities and felt like it was a very down to earth place as opposed to columibia and some of the other elite schools that seem like a waste of money. umdnj is amazing for its buck, anyone can become in state resident and the clinical reputation is by far much better than columbia and other schools that are double the cost...seems like a no brainer to me...columbia for some reason despite being in a poor neighborhood does not offer its students as much clinical experience (this comes from every dentist i know in the essex county area of new jersey who have lots of contact with students coming out of both schools) 🙂

I have no worries about lack of clinical skills I will get when I go to Columbia.

C'mon.. peopple ...Columbia is an accredited institution. and it should provide their students with the adequate and sufficient amont of education, including clinical skills as well.

I ve been to 8 schools for interview, and I never got an impression about Columbia lacking clinics "by far" in comparison with other schools. There might be some other schools that provide more clinical education than columbia. but that does not necessarily mean that Columbia does not provide the necessary or enough.

every school has its pros and cons. and I don t think that columbia has below necessary level of clinical education, but there are some schools that provide more than average.

I dont know why people are bashing around Columbia so badly.😕

I got into both UMDNJ and Columbia. and I am going to Columbia 😀 cause I think it will be easier for me to work hard in Columbia.

Yeah I have to agree that you will get very good, if not excellent, education from Columbia. However, you should note that Columbia dental curriculum ASSUMES that all their stuents will go on to postgraduate training in residency, such as GPR, specialty residencies, etc. This is part of their educational philosophy, as stated by their dean - if you went to their interview, you probably heard the same speech by faculty members. It will also be NY state law that all newly graduated dentists have to do postgraduate training after dental school in order to practice in NY. Hence, Columbia doesn't feel as much urgency as schools in other areas to train their students clinically. On the contrary, in NJ, since dentists can practice without going through residency, UMDNJ tries its best to make sure its grads are as clinically competent as they can be after graduating from dental school. This is why UMDNJ has inordinate amount of clinical requirements for graduation, which is one of the reasons why 4th year students from last year cheated in order to graduate on time (although I'm not trying to provide excuses for them).

Btw, whether you go to Columbia or UMDNJ, be prepared to work your ass off. Trust me, I never met anyone from either of these schools who said it was anything close to easy. Then again, don't listen to all the horror stories either ... much of it is exaggeration.

I got into Cloumbia and I'm waiting to hear from UMDNJ (Just had my interview today, watsup Judy? If you see this....). If I get in to UMDNJ what do you guys think are the pros and cons about both? I'm a little torn...

What scandal are you all referring to? To those accepted or already interviewed, did they state how many were accepted prior to Jan.?

That "scandal" everybody was talkin about.. of the kids cheating had been corrected. so i don't think tht should be a concern for anybody.

As for the scandal in the internal workings of umndj.. that don't affect your experience really in dental school..unless u work for administrative.

did anyone who got accepted to UMDNJ do the gateway to dentistry program? im doin it jan.2. just wondering how it went. and did they mention it in the interview?

i second that.

nope didn't do it.but if u got in to the gateway...definitly do it!! i heard that if u did gateway.. and u come in for an interview..u really don't have an interview and u just talk lol cuz u kno the ppl already..no need for an interview. (well my interview was just a convo also..and i didn't do gateway..)

gateway kinda equals guranteed acceptance

unless u kill somebody/cheat in school/have bad grades (which i doubt cuz u got in gateway)

DO IT!!!

i know 2 ppl who got in who did gateway...i mean they had good stats they got into penn/uconn/columbia so i dont know if the gateway really helped...i didnt do gateway had casual convo interview and got accepted...the ppl i know LOVED it...

so would that mean... UMDNJ is somewhat competitive?.. after all its the only dental school in new jersey. so anyone who wants to save money would want to go there.

I agree. I interviewed there in October or November of 2005. I very much liked the faculty, students and everyone else @UMDNJ. I think it's a good school.

I did the gateway program and I have an interview next month. I hope I get in!

Anyway, it really is a great program. I absolutely LOVED it. You get to do a lot of hands-on work that most pre-dents never get to experience. Plus it is a great school with an excellent staff and everyone is very nice there. Get ready because you will have a blast!

rchuloholla-- i love your compassion for umdnj!!! I will see you next year 🙂

yup yup ill see two there next year...where are you guys thinking of living?

Society Hill in Newark (not JC) has affordable condos that are rented out, and it's close to school - only about 2 blocks away.

WOW, more than the rent for UCLA owned apartments in westwood. I pay $920 for a two bedroom apartment (including utilities). It's worth it. UMDNJ is a good school. Again, I very much liked the faculty and the whole atmosphere.

are there any girls that are def goin to umdnj?? if so, what are you doing about housing!?
