who's the "worst" applicant.....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Racergirl, you needn't apologize for the bad grades. Older applicants have black marks on their transcripts that they usually overcome thru stellar marks later on, just like the younger applicant set.

OPM's (Old Pre-meds) are notorious for that. I know one 3rd year who set an OPM record for a 1.25 before leaving prior to expulsion. He got into KCOM and is now in Michigan doing clincals. He is a helluva guy to boot. Quite bright as well.

I invite you to look over at the SDN hosted site and introduce yourself. http://www.studentdoctor.net/opm/

We have a lively, if not smaller older crowd. Your story will be an inspiration to many of our crowd.

Give me a girl with a 3.3 and an attitude of WANTING to learn anyday over the kid with a 4.0 who feels he is ENTITLED to a chair somewhere because of his grades. People with A averages drop out of medical schools all the time, not that 3.3's don't, and no one advised the school about that possibilty with that genius.

Get over the gpa thing man. It is only one part of the formula. The real power lies in one's desire to be the best. I know someone graduating this year. She has said her IQ is only 100, but her USMLE scores have rocked. She scored in the top 10% on step 1 and 2. She has more drive to succeed than the other 90%. She is also 49. She also might just turn into a Trauma Surgeon and don't tell her she can't, because that will only drive her further to smoke your butt back to that classroom you call home.

People are more than numbers and stats. Eventually, you might figure this out.

While I appreciate your support very much, futrfysian, (and thanks, I am aware of and have posted on OPM in the past) I must stop short of supporting your above post. I don't like it when older applicants rip on younger ones. I'm not saying that's what your doing, but that's what it reminds me of.

I have the utmost respect for people who know what they want to do with their lives, are able to focus on that goal, and have the determination to follow it through, all at the age of 22!

We all find our own paths to the future. One is not better than the other. Lighten up on ADL. s/he's just feeling the pressure and frustration like so many others right now...

Racergirl- thank you for understanding that my posts were not about trying to bash you, but to vent frustration because of what I misinterpreted your 9 F's post to mean. Good luck with everything, from the way you have stuck up for me, even though I said some things that could be understood to be not friendly, I would like to thank you for being so nice. 🙂

And to futrfysian, I'm not talking about being entitled to anything. I'm also out of school - and have worked for a nonprofit for a few years. At some point though, I still have disagree with you and say grades should count for something.

It's so nice to see everyone getting along. 🙂 🙂
