Yeah - my sister and my father are like "Go big or go home!" Yeah... Meanwhile I'm freaking out trying to figure out why there aren't any MD/PhD "safeties"

P.S. I am still cracking up about that bikini scout post!

Let me guess.....you're Indian or Asian?

Indian or Asian he says...

It's interesting though because I have some Asian relatives and they all seem to have some very misguided views about Med School. Not only that but they think that if you get into an ivy school like Harvard the world will bow at your feet and I just think it's all very funny. I guess it's not only them, everyone is a little off, but I don't know they seem to take it to the extreme.

Well, one of my friends who is Indian gets offended if someone calls him Asian. The same goes for a couple of other people I know. It was meant like "You're probably either Indian, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean?

definitely have no idea. even dad who is a doc (though an FMG from India) thinks for sure ill get in somewhere

my parents always say...."so and so's son/daughter got into pharmacy school...dental school...optometry school......, so im sure youl get into medical school"...i die a little inside everytime someone says this to me.

I'm just glad that I am not alone... so last night I explained to my mom that it's going to be alot of money to apply and all that jazz... lol... she was like how? I told her all about primaries and sceondary fees... then travel expenses. Here is exactly how it went:

Me: Yea mom, I'm going to apply to about 15 schools
Mom: Shouldn't you apply to more?
Me: Well it's alot of money
Mom: Don't you just pay one fee
Me: No mom
Mom: ...
Me: First you have to pay the primary fee, then each school has it's own sort of application and you have to pay them each a secondary fee.
Mom: Then you find out if you are accepted or not.
Me: No
Mom: Then where is all the money going.
Me: I don't know but then you have to get invited to an interview
Mom: An interview?
Me: Yes.
Mom: So then they come out to visit you.
Me: No MOM, you have to go to the school.
Mom: Well are they going to pay for the travel expenses
Me: NO MOM YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT
Mom: Who in the hell has all this money, if they are interested in you they should come see you!
Me: Now mom, when have you ever heard of... you know what never mind
Mom: After you spend all of this money and they interview you, are you gauranteed an accpetance
Me: No mom, I could be put on the waiting list.
Mom: Well you won't be, you have good interview skills.
Me: (giving up) Ok mom
Mom: Maybe you should add five more schools just in case
Me: Ok mom

lol... it's just funny. I am still afraid to tell her about this website, because she will start asking questions... and... a big headache for me....

My parents don't fully understand the process, but they do know that it is super competitive. I've only applied to 7 schools (all in California) because I want to stay close to my family and significant other. My dad keeps bugging me to apply to more schools so that I can get in somewhere. Good advice, but a) I don't WANT to go anywhere else - I'd rather reapply and b) he tells me to "add more top 20 schools" to my list. Like that's going to help much.

I e-mailed my father the link to my MDapps yesterday. I expect to shortly let you know that it was the worst decision of my life.:scared:

I don't think that my parents realize how difficult it is to get into medical school. My dad wanted to go to medical school, but chose not to because of my siblings and me. I think a lot of the time he's living the pre-med/medical school experience through me. In my parents eyes, you just do what is necessary to get in. If you need a high GPA, get a 4.0. If you need a solid MCAT score, get a 40. Of course I had hopes of doing all of these things when I entered college, but then reality set in. Getting into medical school is much easier said than done. And I really can't stand it when people assume you're a complete idiot just because you didn't get into medical school. This is especially frustrating when you know that none of them have a prayer of breaking 3 on any section of the MCAT.
