So I'm thinking about what specialties I might want to go into, and anesthesiology keeps coming up. Why did everyone choose anesthesiology? What do you enjoy about it now that you're there? What are some of the drawbacks? And what other specialties did you consider along the way?

why are you interested in anesthesia? No one should convince you or sell you their field. Pick what you want to do. Do lots of different electives in different specialties and pick what you liked the most. Plain and simple.

I agree with the previous post. You can read about what a specific field "does" all you want but until you have DONE it you really can't be sure you will like it. Most students change what they want to do multiple times thru medical school. I personally went thru 2-3 thoughts before I ever hit clinical years then completely switched up in my clinical years. Once you start doing clinicals you really start narrowing everything down and eventually it hits you. Its a process, you find out the type of science you like (anatomy vs path vs phys/pharm etc), the type of patients, the environment (hospital, ER, OR, Clinic, a mixture....) etc until you have a good idea. Once you have a few solid ideas you schedule rotations in those fields, try to get as well rounded exposure as you can in the fields you're considering and you will find it. No easier way, no one can tell you "if you like A do B" etc. 👍

There are many great threads on this site that will help answer your question, just do a search.

As a Christian, I enjoy anesthesiology / pain management since its an intimate field in the sense of taking care of people.

I also wanted to read Blade's posts every week go to sleep having nightmares when I end up in the unemployment line..okay kidding...

I would apply to your home residencies and try to live with your friends / family.

If I were to go back in life I would have considered a dental subspecialty as I enjoy working with people but hate politics. I also prefer rural areas and there is room for them in rural spots..

Grew up in a family of doctors, from childhood, I just knew.. I will be a doctor that will protect people from pain.

i really did love pharm and phys.
i guess i am somewhat of a control freak (and have been called OCD by my junior residents.) i feel like lots of anesthesia is controlling the chaos

i considered ER - fun and again controlled chaos -- but the social issues and primary care BS got me down.
i considered surgery - but I am not an egomaniac and i like being the "good cop." (and i didn't want medicine to consume my life.)

I think I've said this before. Why did I choose anesthesia? I had a list of things in order of importance I needed from the job.

No more rectal exams or PAP smears was number 1.

I want to sit down most of the time - number 2

I love freezing my as* off on a daily basis - number 3

I like to measure urine outputs - number 4

I took a good look at what I really wanted (see above) - and anesthesia just fit so perfect.

I'd like to resurrect this thread if I could.

Why did you choose Anesthesiology?

Now that you're in it, do you feel your reasons for initially choosing the speciality have been validated by your own experience within the specialty?

Anesthesiology:

Indoors
Sitting down
Air Conditioning
One pt at a time to worry about
One piece of paper at a time to worry about
No rounding
No "clinic"
No long admission notes to write (okay, ICU guys maybe)
See pharmacology in action, no giving a med to a pt and waiting 3 weeks to see if it was a good idea (as in internal medicine)
Get to do a bunch of procedures
Pts mostly asleep, don't have to talk to them much
Good salary
Moderately easy, shorter residency
Mostly nice guys go into anesthesia
Unlike a dentist, everybody likes to see anesthesia come in the room

I love these posts - because everyone echoes the reasons why I am switching from internal medicine...

🙂
