Why are IMGs favored over DOs in the bigger name/more competitive places? I saw on Cornell's Anesthesiology page that there are a few foreign grads as well as some grads from St. George University but not a single DO. It seems a little weird to me. Is this just more common at the top programs because the mentality has been ingrained?

This is not universally true, at least not for anesthesia. A broader survey of all the top (anesthesia) programs would definitely show more DO than IMG/FMG grads. It is likewise much easier for a DO to get interviews than Caribbean students, if they have the same stats otherwise. Again, I can only speak to one specialty.

The exceptions are the small handful of people from SGU and other offshore schools who knock USMLE out of the park (260+), or the FMGs who were already attendings in their home country and/or have PhDs. This may be the case with Cornell, not sure. But there are a few programs, particularly in NYC and Boston that have never interviewed a DO for whatever reason.

It sure seems like most of the DO discrimination I've heard of has been in NYC and California

Even ones from LUCOM? Just playing with you buddy!
I'm not even kidding, I'd rank IMGs over LUCOM grads all day every day.

Though, honestly, if I were a PD I'd really fairly consider IMGs- there's a lot of great ones out there that don't get a fair shake and could really make a program look good if you gave them a chance.

We know Mad Jack...we know. 🙂

What would you do if your daughter married a LUCOM grad?

J/c if u are really serious. Don't LUCOM grads still have to pass Step 1? Isn't passing Step 1 enough to rank them over IMGs that get to study for like 4 months? Idk anything about LUCOM so I was jc why they get so much hate.

There are two types of IMGs. One type is from PUMC, the other is from SG. They are very different and surely are considered very differently in residency match. I am not saying which type is better just don't get mixed up.
