I am just looking back on my med school experience-now I am a fourth year going into Psych, and I am not biased in the least but honestly I have realized throughout my third year, every single field-medicine, surgery (especially!) obgyn and EM etc-those are probably the big four which make up most inpatient patients-completely disregard psych problems as "real" problems and I think it is the most unfortunate thing. I do not know how many of you have gone through a depression or anything but I think a depression, or suicide or a severe anxiety breakout-or any real psych issue that comes to a front is one of the most dibiliating experiences of a persons life-and I am just shocked as to why other fields view psych as a "joke" field and not real problems.

It is kind of embarrasing for the medical field-I hold the highest respect for each field because I know each one is a necessary part of patient care. I recognize teh amazing job surgeons do to save peoples lives-I admire OBGYNS for their amazing way to save newborns, and very sick pregnant women-I admire Medicine and their subspecialities for picking up cancer, disease and whatever else a person is suffering from-yet nobody else respects psychiatrists for helping someones mental state.

When you think about it-for each and everyone of us-what is more important than our mental state-we can be phsycially sick or healthy but if our mental state is not right who cares-havent you ever been really down on the world and it didnt matter that we were pshycially healthy-it seemed like life had no meeaning when our mental health was down-it just seems like a shame that we all cannot respect each otehr fields-I wish we could start a new trend in medicine with this generatation-we ALL ARE IMPORTANT!!!!!

Probably because of our own lack of competence in addressing psych issues in patients.. The easiest way to deal with it is to make jokes about it.

probably because of difficulty treating psych disorders.

I just saw the new Scorsese movie, the Departed, and I tell you what, Psych would have been much cooler had all attendings been as hot as the one in this flick, in fact, I might have considered it as a career.

Probably because you are a nutcase, a pathological liar, and a pathetic loser.

Make up your scizophrenic minds. In one post you're a fourth year, in another post you're a PGY with an MD and a brand new car, and in another post you're still premed.

Yeah, psych is a good field for you.

(OP is a troll, btw)

how do you define a troll? I simply asked a questionwhich was valid-oh ya really trollish

Psych is frowned upon because people don't want to deal with mental illness. It makes them uncomfortable.

It is also not considered very prestigious (salary, ability to match, etc.).

it is also not very quantifiable. diagnoses and treatments rely almost entirely on what the patient tells you, whereas most of us are more comfortable dealing with the concrete than with the abstract.

i'll also put in a plug for how annoying patients with personality disorders are. almost by definition, these people don't really believe that there is anything wrong with them, and only through years and years of counseling can they begin to gain some insight into why they're so messed up.

There is a fine line in Psych between real disorders and personality differences. I think we do a poor job in making those distinctions. Because Psych is more abstract than other fields, it is difficult to determine whether someone is really sick. It is also hard to define what "sick" even means in many cases. As an example, I recently read an article that some Psychiatrist claims to have discovered "Road Rage Disorder." In Miami, 60% of the drivers would meet the criteria. Are they all sick? That's hard to say. I think most of us respect obvious illness, Schitzophrenia, Autism, Manic Depressive or Bipolar Disorders, and even some forms of addiction. However, the effectuve treatment and even definition of other common disorders is hard to quantify, such as Depression or ADHD.
