Why Creighton?

If any of you out there are currently attending Creighton SOM of is a Creighton undergrad, I would really like to talk to you via phone (I'll call of course) or AIM. Please PM me.

Or if anyone can answer the following questions here....

1. If I said that I'm interested in working with underserved, urban poplns would you say at Creighton is a good fit?

2. Do you really need to go to a undergrad Jesuit school or somehow be affiliated with the school to have a chance at getting in?

3. What do you like most about your school? What do you like least least about it?

4. How much clinical exposure do you get in the 1st two years? The web site description doesn't cut it for me. "early clinical exposure" I hate how it's so vague. Is it shadowing? Is it inpatient, outpatient, classroom based?

5. Do you think that the Jesuit tradition/values differs greatly from any other Catholic order? I work for a Franciscan run clinic and am incredibly happy. My hope is that Creighton shares the same philosophy and general spirit that I experience now at the clinic.

6. I have tons more questions, but maybe that can be answered over the phone...

Creighton University Medical Center has a large population of Spanish speaking immigrants, many of whom are underserved. Additionally, Creighton got a rather large grant this year to open a student-run clinic for the underserved. So yes, I'd say it is a good fit.

2. Do you really need to go to a undergrad Jesuit school or somehow be affiliated with the school to have a chance at getting in?

Absolutely not! I had no affiliation with Creighton or with a Jesuit school and got in. Many of my friends also had no such affiliations. You are probably afforded a slight advantage if you have a close conntection to Creighton, but if you don't have that you aren't at a disadvange.

3. What do you like most about your school? What do you like least least about it?
Most: The students and the atmosphere. We all get along and function as a cohesive bunch. I'm not best friends with everyone in the class, but I like everyone and we support each other.

Least: Well, winter is not always pleasant.

First of all, I think that schools that offer lots of clinical exposure in the first year are kind of B.S. Seriously, what can I do. We don't know anything yet. The only people who are remotely competent clinically are those who were nurses before going to med school.

That said, we have a "learn to give a physical" class. We work with standardized patients and do physicals on a handful of real patients. Outside of the curriculum there are multiple volunteer opportunites to do clinical stuff. There will be even more this coming year with the new student-run clinic that is opening.

More or less, I'd say yes. I am not Catholic or particularly religous, however I think that values of compassion and ethical conduct are heavily promoted by Creighton. They don't require that you be religous, per se, but there is certainly a spirit of giving that the students share and is heavily promoted by the university.

I received my Bachelor's degree from Creighton and between Creighton SOM and another school (MCW) I ultimately chose Creighton. Granted I have not started medical school there yet but I hear the same thing from every student; the class is very cohesive and the atmosphere is very friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my undergraduate education at Creighton and loved nearly all of my professors. Everything I hear about the medical school suggests that the same philosophies driving the undergraduate colleges are at work in the medical school as well. I can tell you as a former undergraduate that Creighton is very much about service to the community and seems to present a number of opportunities to be actively involved if you want to be. Since I haven't started yet I can't really speak on clinical exposure during the first and second years. I can tell you however that the friends of mine who've graduated from Creighton SOM felt that they were well prepared, clinically. So, take it for what it's worth. I interviewed at 5 schools and none felt as friendly or as welcoming as Creighton.
