When did "So I can provide a good life for my family" become unacceptable?

It is acceptable but it does not specifically answer the question of why dentistry. Are pharmacists not able to provide a good life? Are accountants not able to provide a good life? You can provide a good life for your family with any hard working job assuming that you put the effort into it.

So... WHY DENTISTRY?

Are you kidding me? If a pre-dent ever said that they would do pro-bono work every single time someone couldn't afford it, I openly would say much more condescending things to his/her face than "I'm sending them to you."

Lmao. I really doubt you would. Anyways, it's called courtesy and respect for your fellow peers. I guess being nice to others is perceived as being sensitive to you. I didn't know it was considered tough to talk down to people.

What has happened in your life to make you so bitter and hardened. Did you get picked on or something? Or did someone say, "it's a tough world out there. You need to toughen up a bit and not be so sensitive. Can't cry over everything" one too many times when you were younger? Just a curious question. 🙂

In all seriousness, I understand that you're trying to get people to think more and elaborate their reasoning (which I will do come admissions), but at some level I think we should be able to state our most important reason in a single sentence.

Lol, it's as if you're equating my statement to some unspeakable racial slur. What I said was not even close to offensive, so I don't see what's so unbelievable about it.

I'm not bitter and hardened; I'm just realistic. If you honestly think people can/will offer free treatment to every single person who can't afford it, then you are seriously misinformed about the dental profession. Good luck affording all those costs lol. 😍

Lol do you even know how much a chiropracter charges? Each visit he was billing my car insurance company $400.....that little massage you talk about is worth 80 bucks. Cracking your back is like 40 bucks. The he does this adl mumbo jumbo for $60 or so per unit, and you get 3 units of that....plus all this other junk charges. not only that but hes actually a freind of my parents and my mom had back pain before he gave her a commercial back massager thing which costs $1000......can it be because he makes extra so he likes to help people, sure. But there are millions of extremely wealthy people out there who dont help people the way he does. If you guys are in the newark, nj area theres a party for him next week with lots of mlb, nfl, and celebs going to be there. Hes getting the man of the year award. im not even joking. like i said you guys are entitled to your own respective opinions. this is just something i would also like to do when i become a dentist one day, God Willing.

if youre going into dentistry, or any profession really, for the fame and trying to become the big man on campus.... do something else please.

you think you're doing a good deed, but good deeds are done spontaneously.

when a patient comes in for a consult and finds out they cant afford a procedure, but you see it in their eyes that they really want it, and they've sold their car, alot of their belongings and have picked up an extra job just to TRY and save up for this, THATS A GOOD DEED.

if you want the fame and popularity of being "that guy", then do something else. all of youre peers will know you're fake.

trust me, i want to help the next guy just as much as you. I see pages of letters at our office for people who really WANT the help. but its the ones that catch you off guard that really NEED it.

lol im not trying to be famous.....i was giving an example of a man, who helps others out for the sole sake of being NICE....and just showing you guys how when you do good, that good always comes back to you. i dont care about being famous. lol you need to read before you speak. anyway it was good speaking with you guys. i have more important things to do than debate with people on an online forum.

I think the point he was trying to make is that it's ok to do pro-bono work here and there, but not make a career out of it.

With the exception of allahisgreater and iralex801, I think we're all agreeing on the fact that you can't do all this charity work for every poor person (in a private practice setting). Sorry, guys. Start a non-profit organization for that.

if all you want to do is help, go on a mission trip for the rest of your life and let someone else take over your practice.

its good to give back to the community.

and i agree to one of the early posts about if jon doe came in, then his mom, sister, aunt, neighbor and so on will come in.... then your peers will catch on and everyone will want free work because jon doe did.

you cant please everyone. unless all you do is free work all the time (heck, and you'll still not please everyone).
