I'm sure we all have interesting stories on how we found PT and (hopefully) fell in love with the profession. What's yours?

I initially was a physics major with the intention of becoming an aerospace engineer, weird, right? 🙂

I was first exposed to PT when I had to go through it myself after tearing both my ACL and my meniscus. I thought that it seemed like such a cool job. As time went by, I realized that the major I was studying wasn't a good fit for me. I was enjoying the classes and doing well in them, but it was just becoming more and more evident that I am a people person in need of a people job. That's when I really started to explore physical therapy. I switched my major to health science and that was my moment. It just felt like this is what I was meant to do 🙂

What about you?

I was a bio major hoping to get into med school. That plan was crushed my sophomore year when organic chemistry kicked me in the butt. I considered research but slowly realized that it would not be a great fit. I'm someone who is always moving and like being social. So I looked into professions that would match my personality and lifestyle. PT was up there in the search. Couple months after that search I went to observe in an outpatient setting. It was awesome. The concept of getting people better by optimizing movement was amazing to me. It was the first time I was exposed to physical therapy. Before the search I didn't even know PT existed. I really felt in love with the profession after I saw the impact it had on the quality of life of one of my students. This kid went from ambulating on a stroller to running to class. He went from being stuck on his iPad in his room to being part of the school cheerleading squad. He lost weight, laugh all the time (so much it was contagious), and have much more community experience. He gained all that by just moving. After working with that kid for three years, I became convinced that PT is "IT"

I almost died in a car accident. I had to do intensive physical therapy and have to live with hardware in my body.

Engineering and Physics are really interesting to study. I love mechanical engineering coursess but the jobs are nowhere near as fun. Most engineers leave the field and many that I spoke with said their jobs where not as they had expected.

I love the fact that PT solves problems pretty quickly, is mostly autonomous, and of course the relationships and impact on patients. Not to mention, it is fairly active and has limited computer time.
