How would one answer that correctly for a medical school interview?

Truthful answer... because I'm a bit socially awkward, and I don't want to inconvenience someone else into having a random guy stay with him for a night.

Then tell him so.
if you want to be put on the fast-track towards a rejection
I wouldn't go for the "inconveniencing" argument either because these students volunteer to host.
Yeah I think you're right... what about the snoring excuse?
You had originally planned on staying with a friend/family member, but things fell through and it was too late by then to schedule a student host.
As I had happen to me when I applied last time.
I would say that is a pretty sorry excuse. People snore, it's OK.
The OP just needs to get out of his shell especially if he expects to become a doctor where social interactions are required
I enjoy waking up at random hours of the night, taking showers, while singing loudly; I tend to repeat this 2-4 times a night. I felt staying with a student host, might inconvenience them due to my habit of singing in the shower at night, but I can do a very good rendition of [insert random song here] would you care to hear.
Just say that you wanted a good night's sleep to be prepared. When I went on interviews, the two times that I decided to go with a student host, I ended up sleeping on the floor/on a couch with no blanket. Suffice to say that I decided to stay at hotels from there on out. Now, I don't expect the med student to offer me their bed or anything, but at least they could offer me a blanket with the couch if they're going to volunteer to host students...
now THAT is gold.
