"Why didn't you stay with a student host?"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How would one answer that correctly for a medical school interview?

"The frequent flyer miles I've accumulated over the past couple years won me a hotel voucher, applicable at most of their partnered hotels. I understand that staying with a student host is a great way to get a handle on the environment of the institution, but I've tried to get a sense of that by scheduling activities that don't require the imposition of a complete stranger living with them for a couple days."

You should answer that question by telling them why you didn't stay with a student host.

😕

Truthful answer... because I'm a bit socially awkward, and I don't want to inconvenience someone else into having a random guy stay with him for a night.

Then tell him so.

I understand what you're saying OP. It's not that I'm socially awkward, it's just that I'd prefer having a nice rest before a big morning so that I can be sharp. That doesn't always happen when staying with other people. I like the whole frequent flyers bit though.

i stayed with a friend/ family member??

That would be a wrong answer; you're gonna have to interact with people in very personal ways as a doctor, so saying you're socially awkward I think would look bad for you. Say something else if the question comes up.

But seriously, I can't imagine you'd ever be asked something as trivial as that in a med school interview; has anyone ever actually been asked that?

Do some interviewers really ask this?!?!

You wanted to make sure and be fresh and well rested for your interview and didnt want to risk having to sleep on a couch or staying with someone with a crappy shower. You got a super good deal when you booked your flight + hotel on expedia/travelocity. The thought of sleeping at a complete strangers house just added too much stress (perhaps word this last one a bit better, haha).

You had originally planned on staying with a friend/family member, but things fell through and it was too late by then to schedule a student host.

As I had happen to me when I applied last time.

i think the question would be more like "did you stay with a student host?"

which might prompt the OP's original question

Not inconveniencing somebody would be a fine way to put it, but socially awkward? No. I think the wanting to be well-rested by sleeping in a hotel would be legit too. Personally I'd say I snore too loudly to stay with a student host.

Yeah I think you're right... what about the snoring excuse?

I would say that is a pretty sorry excuse. People snore, it's OK.

The OP just needs to get out of his shell especially if he expects to become a doctor where social interactions are required

I enjoy waking up at random hours of the night, taking showers, while singing loudly; I tend to repeat this 2-4 times a night. I felt staying with a student host, might inconvenience them due to my habit of singing in the shower at night, but I can do a very good rendition of [insert random song here] would you care to hear.

I don't think you understand how bad it is. Maybe if I stay with a student host I'll bring them earplugs.

now THAT is gold.

Just say that you wanted a good night's sleep to be prepared. When I went on interviews, the two times that I decided to go with a student host, I ended up sleeping on the floor/on a couch with no blanket. Suffice to say that I decided to stay at hotels from there on out. Now, I don't expect the med student to offer me their bed or anything, but at least they could offer me a blanket with the couch if they're going to volunteer to host students...

Sleeping on the floor with no blanket sounds rough.
