Agree that it is multifactorial. Some may keep it in their files, others may use it to screen psychos before letting them near their patients, others might want to check to see if you are hopeless, others may just want to gauge your experiences so that they know what they are getting into (for example, I always ask first years with me at student clinic if they have past EMT or other medical experience so I don't waste 10 minutes explaining how to take vitals). My favorite reason would be so that they have something to talk to you about during the hours of you sitting in close proximity.
