...into plastic surgery?

It's understandable that this specialty can be ultra picky and choose only those top students with top USMLE scores. However, why are these brilliant people attracted to this specific specialty (anything beyond money and lifestyle)?

And where do those with the lower USMLE scores choose to go?

B) They don't. Specialties like derm and plastics have a high step I average because there are so few spots. Therefore PDs can be more selective and pick the cream of the crop. There are probably the same number of 260+ students in most other residencies but they get diluted because there are so many more positions.

Plastic Surgery isn't all cosmetics. In Plastic Surgery there are so many different ways to do the same procedure, each plastic surgeon usually has their own unique way of doing things. There is a lot of room for creativity and innovation, unlike the majority of medical specialties.

Some residencies are much more competitive than others because of the salaries. You should look into primary care if you USMLE scores are low.
