"Why do you want to be a doctor?"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Call me old fashioned, but I really believe in helping people. I spent several years living in Amazonas, Brazil. I saw so much suffering, I knew I had the ability to help these people one day. It seemed like a waste not to do so. Since then I have worked in a medical laboratory. Though not direct patient care, it really helpled confirm my decision. It is really awsome to come home from work knowing you made a difference in the quality and quantity of someones life.

And last but not least; it certainly beats trying to trick people into buying phone plans that they don't need, with artificial discounts. (why wont Qwest leave me alone, I'm onto them. I know they're shameless liars, after the little bit of money I have left, post med school applications.) +pissed+

Yeah...that about sums it up for me. Oh, and throw in some money too.

No one mentioned the chicks?!

personal experience involving family member during my childhood initiated the desire to help loved ones that are hurt---->saw family friends help out our destitute situation, which then inspired me to help people that don't have much----->awesome clinical experiences at childrens hospital----> solidification of wanting to be a physician esp. for children because they are the future of society and ensuring their well being creates a healthier society for years to come---->the application process----->me being very broke and waiting for interviews and adding to my already thick folder of rejection letters.

call me selfish, but i want to have the power to be able to save someone's life. I want to be the one that people turn to when they need help. it seems fulfilling to know that if you weren't there to help this person, they might not be able to make it to the next day, but becase of me, they are able to walk their daughter down the aisle. it's kinda like personal satisfaction. I will someday possess this amazing knowledge that is always changing. call me a nerd, but i actually like to learn.

and i really like interacting with people, work with a bunch of poeple ffor a common goal,

i actually had the answer to this question written down cause we had to write it down in our pre-health club, only i can't find it now.

Selfish! 😛

P.S. - You owe me one!

I want to have a career that will never bore me. I also want to spend the first half of my life in school because I'm scared of the "real world"...the real world being that time in one's life when he or she decides that a minivan or a volvo is a nice looking car. Sarcasm on: I want to marry a gold digger who has to have a pain killer and a bottle of wine to go to bed each night.
Sarcasm off:

I have an unexplainable attraction to medicine. I'm going to have a hell of a time writing my personal statement before june.
