I think that's such a hard question, in all honesty, because I want to be a doctor,,,,, but I know the question is asked to show some level of interest and deep seated fascination with the institution on the applicants part,,,,
what I'm really thinking is I'd go anywhere that would take me because I don't have the luxury of expecting to make it in to two billion schools....

SO my question is do you want to kiss butt and say how prestegious and wonderful and blah blah blah the place is OR do you find that you just write about why it's special to you, location, etc?

I'm not really looking for an answer just venting after writing Northwestern's essay number 2

i feel your pain. how am i supposed to eloquently say that im interested in your school b/c when i looked you up in MASR, my stats met your requirements? and id love to go there because id love to go to ANY med school that accepted me?

Exactly!

That's not really a problem when you have applied to only 4 med schools ot of a possible 4, but yea, I get your point.

No to the first question. If fact, I think they would just roll there eyes when reading your essays. They already know that they are great.

The way I've been approaching this question is by writing about the specific aspects of the school that most appeal to me, such as location, certain classes they offer, research opportunities, etc.

i hear your frustrations. i used to think the same way. however, you have to realize that these schools are trying to select applicants who will fluorish at their institution. if you write/wrote an essay that merely tells them how great they are you are really not helping your cause. And you dont necessarily have to write how the school is your number one choice because of the weather, location, etc. all you really have to do is give reasons why you would be a good fit there and (here's the key) give examples that support those reasons. For example...."I want to go to blah univ b/c they have a strong research program and i have been involved with basketweaving research for the past 3 years. I'd like to be able to continue my basketweaving research at blah univ." done...you've talked about the school and talked about yourself and drew the parallels. dont confine yourself to this example...another example - "i enjoy tutoring calculus to pigs. teaching is very enjoyable to me. pbl requires that i not only learn from my colleagues but teach to them as well. i would be a good fit for pbl because, as i have demonstrated by teaching calculus to pigs, i enjoy teaching." BE CREATIVE. gasp...this could actually require thinking!

surely/hopefully you have enough experiences to draw upon in your life that you can write two paragraphs for each and every med skool out there that offer examples as to how you would be a good fit for their institution. u can make a case for yourself for every school out there...you just need to take the time and think.

Thanks UCLAMAN I especially enjoyed the tutoring pigs part good luck at NW

No hatin...I love Northwestern and was more than happy to get with the kissin...I was just sayin with questions like "explain how organ-based approach is a better way for physicians to learn" they are fishin for complements. I was only more that happy to oblige. It was the 2000 characters that frustrated me because I wanted to talk about the ACTUAL reasons I wanted to go to the school but couldn't because the praise they wanted took up all the space.

i dont believe thats what the question said...its not fishin for compliments...it asked how how it would be a better way for YOU to learn how to be a physician. If YOU don't feel it is a good way to learn how to become a physician then perhaps YOU should reconsider your reasons for wanting to come here or come up with some bs. but dont complain, cause its not saying its the best system to learn under. its asking if YOU will enjoy learning under such a sytem. if YOU can t find reasons that YOU would flourish under the system then y in the hell would the school want to take you? Thats not fishin for compliments, thats just being real.

but hey...you're not hearing me and perhaps no one else is either...so go on...keep crying about your struggles with NU's secondary.

and if you'd like to elaborate on your "ACTUAL" reasons for wanting to come here then hey...bust open ms word and write an addendum letter...the admissions office will be more than happy to toss it in your file.

Jesus, quit congratulating yourself. I had problems with writing a meaningful response in 2000 characters with spaces. That is half a page single spaced. That is just barely enough space to begin with the obligatory praise about how wonderful the school is blah blah blah.

When adcoms have hard choices between two similar candidates, they often like to pick the student who they feel best "fits the school" i.e. prefers the learning style employed by the school, fits the schools "philosophy" etc.

Read each schools web site...try to get a feel for what they think there about...and then try to spit this back at them.

"I learn best from PBL"

next day, different school...

"I prefer lectures"

Once you get some acceptances, you can consider how you ACTUALLY feel about the schools and pick the one that fits you best...but for the sake of the admissions process, every school is the best school you've ever seen!

I understand this totally, but it's what I kind of hate about this whole process. All those little '' lies '', all that BS...

Who needs to ease up on the haterade????

not hatin...just saying you whine too much.

to the op, i was in a similar situation, i just wrote how pbl and organ based fit me....for example, i really like pbl because i study in groups during undergrad and it has helped me understand concepts better when i talk them over with my friends....and organ based cause i find it more organized and easier to swallow, learning everything pertaining to one organ instead of learning stringing everything together if you learn subjects individually....

but i didnt get a chance to write about the other cool stuff about NU, like chicago, the international programs, some of the student activities like the Horizons program which i thought was cool.... 🙁

just be personal about why NU

Anyone else find it ridiculous that Miami wants "why do you want to go here" in 750 characters? My bulleted list in word was too long for the app!
