Why does NYMC have the reputation as a back-up?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

When I interviewed, it seemed like a great school with awesome clinical opportunities (westchester med + NYC hospitals). I feel like it gets a bad rep on SDN. The students seemed happy and they have super convenient on-campus housing that seems to foster good community. I get that it is low-ranked and doesn't have the highest matriculant stats, but I think the education students receive is great. If anyone can shed light on this, that would be great. Thanks!

The only reason I can think of is because of all the other amazing schools in New York making NYMC not stand out as much. But who knows/cares if you like it and you are accepted then go!

I have never heard anyone refer to NYMC as a "back-up"

The idea of back-ups/safeties falls apart in the medical admissions process due to yield protection. I doubt they spend interview slots on people that look like they are headed to Columbia/Cornell type places instead.

I have no idea. Cost? I wonder the same thing all the time, I was just talking to someone yesterday about this. Look at the match list, it gets you anywhere you want to go. Plus research is funded and you can pretty much do work in any field you want, go to NYC any time without the expense of living there, the list goes on.

Lower LizzyM score, big decline in research since the Touro takeover, long term hospital association issues. As one of my colleagues put it, "even the Catholic archdiocese of New York lost money on them!"

Because a ton of applicants apply there based on its MSAR profile... no in state preference, average GPA and MCAT. These other applicants tend to get interviews and acceptances from other schools. I was offered an II at NYMC but turned it down because I was accepted to Jefferson. I do not look down on anybody that goes to the school at all, but it's just not quite as good as my other acceptances.
I'm sure this goes for a lot of people. Their match list looks good though! And I know a few docs who work at the hospital I'm at from there who seem very smart

The research point makes sense, but there are a decent number of higher ranked MD schools with the same/lower matriculant MCAT/gpa's.

LizzyM of 68. This is Drexel/Albany/GWU class. There aren't too many MD schools below this, aside from CNU and some of the Midwest or Southern state schools.

If your criteria for "higher ranked" is USN&WR, you are using the wrong criteria.

What would be your criteria for determining rank?

Been meaning to ask you about this.

As a result of the above, do you recommend against a student attending NYMC ?

My rough rule of thumb is by LizzyM score, and I like to think of med schools like battleship classes.

Hence, you have Harvard/WashU/Yale class (LizzyM > 75) Pitt/Northwestern/NYU class (LizzyM =72-75), Hofstra/Emory/Case class and so on. Coming up below them are the Albany/Drexel/NYU class ( LM < 70)

What would be your criteria for determining rank?

Of course not! Unless an applicant is of Harvard/WashU caliber, then NYMC would reject them due to resource protection. This has been discussed in depth in these forums.

The only US MD school I can't recommend under any circumstance is CN"u", for reasons stated in other fora.

Insightful as always.

Thanks goro!

You wouldn't even be asking this question if you heard the screams of joy on match day a few weeks ago. NYMC is a great school that will get you where you want to go. You would be crazy to make a decision based on your impressions from sdn and US News.

I'm curious, now that NYU's LizzyM score is pretty much on par with WashU's, would you put them in the Harvard/WashU/Yale class? Or do you factor reputation (not defined by ranking) into your class system too?

By this criteria, UNC Chapel Hill would be ranked with Drexel (Average LizzyM 69.8). But they are ranked 22 in USnews. How is this possible? Is UNC really comparable to Drexel?

There are exceptions in both directions. For example NYU is above UCSF, but not nearly at that level. U of Washington is extremely well regarded but barely hits the national average for stats. You get the idea.

It's just a rough heuristic.

Ah. Had me panicking for a second. I thought everything I knew was wrong.

I don't give a rat's ass what US Snooze says. The LizzyM scores are rough rules of thumbs, that's all.

^OOOOoooooo. That was a little harsh. And a bad word 😛

I can't recommend them because their parent body protected a child molester for over 20 years. One of their officials was just convicted for this this week.

Spanier is a sack of ****.
Anyway, just out of curiosity.... do you hold any biases against applicants from Penn State?

Yeah, but this has nothing to do with the medical school. The actual medical school and hospital are a six hour drive away from the main campus.

Yeah, just wondering what your opinion is of the medical school's caliber, aside from this scandal.

Tell that to the victims of Jerry Sandusky.

I place Penn in the Drexel/Albany/NYMC class.

? I thought Doctor Strange simply said the actual Penn State medical school is several hours away from the main Penn State campus, and is thus unrelated and not associated with the Penn State scandal

Goro, I respect your presence here on SDN and all of the wisdom you have to impart, but it is simply not fair to make such a brash statement about a medical school simply because of this association. The medical school in Hershey has very little overlap with any of the dealings on the main campus, and the administration overlap is even less. You are quite simply wrong here. Do not invoke these victims to prove a point. It's crass.

Again, tell that to the victims of Jerry Sandusky.

He's a parents, of course he'd be a bit more crass/stringent about this.

I don't give a rat's ass. You wanna go to Penn? Send them an app. But what part of "I can't recommend this school" don't you understand?

Not to be too pedantic, but Penn =/= Penn State. Penn = University of Pennsylvania, which is in Philadelphia.

@Goro -- what are your thoughts on Penn State?

Penn State is a very good school. Their parent hospital offers great training in a wide variety of fields. Hershey sees a lot of Amish patients, who offer their own unique disease states and culture.

Location is a bit of a downer - it's kind of in the middle of Pennsyltucky. It's actually not even near Penn State Main (which is a nice college town). Harrisburg is the closest "city," but not many people willingly spend a lot of leisure time in Harrisburg....

The 2017 match list is definitely impressive. I wish there was a better link rather than that map thing.

What do you think of a LizzyM 73 applicant going to NYMC?
