There are actually a few hemolytic anemias where splenectomy is helpful. Basically the difference is whether the hemolysis is intravascular (ie occurs in the vasculature) or extravascular (ie occurs in the spleen).
Another extravascular hemolytic anemias is IgG-Mediated hemolytic anemias (not IgM). Splenectomy also aids in thalassemias when the transfusion load becomes too high and there are worries about hemochromatosis.
