Why does this acceptance disparity exist in private med schools?

I was wondering, how come many private med schools (eg. columbia) have higher acceptance rates for in-state students vs. out of state students? I didn't think they had the same mission to prioritize students from their own state. If someone could clarify, that would be great!

In state is likelier to actually come if offered an acceptance, even if private school.

Yeah that's what I figured. I am out of state, but am working in NYC this year, so I was wondering if this would mean some new york schools would effectively treat me as in-state.

In-state applicants provide better answers to "why this school."

Also private schools may still have preference for getting people within the community, who would also hopefully stay within the community, especially those in rural areas.

Ya I saw Columbia and penn have this disparity, but interestingly Hopkins is the other way around. 43% post interview acceptance rate for OOS, but only 27% for in state. Why would this be?

Because people who live nearby know that even the Hopkins name cannot make up for Baltimore
