Well, I don't have an IIs yet... I'm not too worried right now, but with so many friends getting acceptances and having attended several interviews at schools I applied to, I'm starting to wonder... Any clues as to why I haven't received one yet? Here are my stats, I'll do my best to provide as much info as possible:

Non URM, straight out of Bio undergrad, MO resident
3.93 GPA
30R MCAT (10PS 11VR 9BS)
ECs include over 300 shadowing hours with many specialties and primary care, medical club dedicated to serving the underserved for 3 years, premed club for 4 years, leadership in it for 2, dedicated sax player for 6 years, other hobbies such being multilingual, weight lifting and soccer player, clinical volunteering for 120ish hours (steady since May, and ongoing at a regular pace), non medical community service, research in music for a semester (with a presentation) and research at a med school for a summer
PS was read by profs/writing center/friends and was said to be very well written. About how early repeated hospital exposure due to family member disability inspired desire for medicine
Letters from 3 Bio profs, one science, one doctor that i've shadowed for 7 years, one music and one humanities
I applied to the following schools: Einstein, Miami Miller, Tufts, Georgetown, WashU (lol), UC Davis (rejected pre secondary), Wisconsin, Iowa Carver, Mizzou, SLU, Keck, Jefferson
Spent time on secondaries, targeted each to bring together specific qualities of my app with their mission statement and values
Complete from late Sept to Mid October at all schools, with one late Oct

Any ideas? I know my GPA is great, and my MCAT is okay. Is it just the lateness that's the reason I haven't gotten any IIs yet? I ended up taking my MCAT later than I would've liked and didn't get my score back till September. I then refined my schools list and started on secondaries... Could it be a bad letter?

If you need any more info, let me know. Any help would be appreciated.

To me your ECs look great. But application lateness is definitely an issue. Plus, you only applied to 12 schools and it looks fairly top-heavy. Einstein, Tufts, Georgetown, Wash U, Davis (especially being OOS), Wisconsin, Iowa and Keck are all pretty competitive.

I think alot of it is application lateness. But I agree that your list should have been larger and more safety/competitive schools. Wisconsin has strong preference for IS or OOS with strong ties.

Even Mizzou, which I think I have a pretty decent shot at, hasn't given me an invite, which is disappointing.

Should I add more safety schools this late in the cycle? I've got primaries submitted to Loyola and Drexel that I never followed up on with a secondary because I eventually decided not to go there... Are there any other safety schools I could look at this late in the cycle?

Absolutely add more schools. However, I don't think you should consider any of those schools safeties, especially with your MCAT. Med school admissions is such a crapshoot of a game, and there are usually people with better stats without IIs from the same schools you're looking at. Good luck. :luck:

Thanks for the quick replies! Added Hofstra, NY College of Medicine, George Washington, Temple and will be filling out the secondaries for Drexel and Loyola. It's late, so pickings were slim. I'll update this thread when I finally get an II.

Yes, the writing process was pretty intensive. Made sure every character counted and contributed in some meaningful way. I consider myself to be a good writer and I really worked hard on it. I received very positive feedback from many sources.

Vectre I swear we're like the same person.

Also a Missouri resident here who applied late (as in October and November secondaries), I think timing is our biggest set-back for the cycle. Honestly you seem qualified enough as a candidate, if you don't get interviews this year, just apply early (as in July-August) next year.

Good luck to us both!

I feel like I would own the entire process if I did it again. I really, really, *really* don't want to though - all that down time next year, and my wallet would be in pain from all of these fees...

Best of luck though.

Still nothing. One piece of advice I received from an MS1 friend is to "call admissions offices" and ask about the status of my app. He said that sometimes, due to sheer volume of applicants, an app can get "lost". Is there any truth to that? Should I take his advice?

The only thing I see is that you do not seem to have a lot of life experience outside of the medical, research, and educational world. A lot of medical schools like to see more than that such as holding another career and getting leadership and management skills through work experience instead of the academic route. Other than that your info seems to be quite substantial.

That's the first the time I've heard a take like that on my situation. In my opinion, I seem to have it covered... I speak 4 languages (three fluently), truly dedicated to an instrument for 6 years, ran over 70 miles a week during the summer, accomplished weight lifter, play/watch several sports, several clubs... I feel like I really fleshed out on my AMCAS what I like to do outside of academics.

Regardless, your point is taken - it will interesting to see if that eventually comes up as a reason for turning me away.

He does have experience outside of health/education. OP your problem is that you sent too few applications too late. The lateness could have killed your chances for this cycle. If you apply to 25+ schools next semester, submit AMCAS June 1st, and submit secondaries within two weeks of receiving, then you will definitely see some interviews. Other than this, you could retake your MCAT.

It is not too late to hear back from schools so just keep waiting. If Feb-March comes around with still no word then start prepping for next cycle.

I think it's because you submitted your application late and applied to few schools. Sure your GPA is great, but your MCAT doesn't reflect it. Just because your GPA is almost a 4.0 doesn't mean your going to get in somewhere.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in a similar situation. 3.9, 35 with weaker ECs than you (but decent) and looks like I'm screwed. I would think that some safer school would've at least given me an II, but apparently that's not the case. Anyway, you seemed to be one of the few people who've been getting the cold shoulder with me so I wanted to wish you luck because I feel your pain.

Yeah, this point has been hammered into my head by now haha. I hope I won't have to learn the hard way. My MCAT is lower than I would've liked, but it's still in the thirties, and combined with my ECs and GPA I really don't think it's unreasonable to have expected to have gotten in somewhere.

Yeah, no such thing as a safety when it comes to med school. Also, with that MCAT, it's almost criminal that you didn't get an II. Did you apply late? Good luck man.

I suppose it's possible for an app to get lost, but I doubt it's very common. Considering how late you applied, it's not surprising that you haven't heard back from a lot of them. My secondaries were sent throughout October and I've only heard from 4 schools out of 22. I just received an email today that I was finally complete at one of them. I wouldn't bother asking admissions about the status of your app just yet. It's expected for it to take this long.

For what it's worth, I think you are a solid applicant. It sucks having to consider reapplying, but I think applying early, doing something meaningful right now to add to your app, and certainly a retaken MCAT with a 3 or 4 point increase would make you very competitive next cycle to the school of your dreams. Hopefully you receive an II soon and won't have to go through this again though. Good luck! :luck:

Not too late. Mostly primary in early august and secondaries by early sept at the latest. Also, didn't realize you were a MO resident. Maybe everyone just thinks were all stupid?

Happened to me at Yale (not that I stand a chance there) but I called and they marked my app complete the same day. I doubt it's common though.
Try sending update letters. I understand that some schools want to see continued interest from applicants who aren't granted an interview in the first review.
Try getting something on your application that you really care about but also stands out to someone reading it. I think that may have helped my app a little (but I have a 35 MCAT which may not be super high, but it probably helps).

Got an II today!

Here's a convo I just had with admissions at one of my top choices:

"Hi, I'd like to inquire about the status of my application."
"Ok, what's your name?"
"Vectre... V-E-C..."
"Hmm... Oh! Looks like your interview is ready to be scheduled! Tomorrow sound good?"
":D"

Unbelievable feeling right now.
