I completed the primary to just two schools and it was a lot of money, and then each school wants a huge secondary fee like $100! Most md schools are just 70. I thought that the first huge cost covered that. Not only that, but they were ten times slower in processing my AACOMAS application. i'm not sure if i can complete the secondary. I received a fee waiver from aamc, but AACOMAS is weird (they have due date for fee waivers). i cant believe this.

Why not? They charge it because people are willing to pay it. I'm sure there are various other justifications for it (paying the admissions people, private school, etc) but that's the bottom line. They offer a medical degree, they like money, and so they charge people $100 to fill out their secondary. If you don't want to pay it, then don't pay it. Someone else will take that interview spot.

Just think that it'll be worth it in the end. I dropped 1k on primaries and probably 1-2k on secondaries and travel expenses. After my first acceptance, I gave a homeless man $100 on the street cause I was so happy. Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!

no, i'm not rich. in fact, i'm -$40 in my checking account right now 🙂

the deans gotta get that bling blaow

just cuz they're non-profit doesn't mean they aren't out to get that money.

You applied to 2 schools that have secondary fees of $100 and assume that EVERY other D.O. school charges the same? I'm pretty sure GWU has a secondary fee over $100. By your logic, all MD schools secondaries are over $100 as well. Pay the fees or don't. Nobody is forcing you.

Thank you! Someone finally thinks it was a good deed. I got crap from all my friends/sibling about how he's just going to use it on drugs. Yes, that could happen, but I also think life is about being happy. Drug related or not, I'm sure he was happy and I'll do it again when I match 4th year.

Supply, demand, the market sets the price, etc. If people will pay it, they'll charge it. In a way, a high secondary fee could be interpreted as a not-for-profit move: if a school charges, say, $175 for their secondary, then maybe some of the people who didn't really want to go to that school would forego the secondary. A savvy school that really wants to maximize their income from secondaries would charge $100 like the schools you mentioned: almost everyone is still willing to pay the fee, but you get the extra $30X4,000=$120,000, which pays for one extra admin, or a secretary and a part-time janitor, or most of the equipment for a modest cell bio lab...

I think that with the money you spend on secondaries you should be granted an interview if you make it that far. A secondary is nothing more than that. They've already considered you to be up to their academic standards with the AACOMAS.

Schools should at least refund half the money if you're not considered.

As for the dude that gave the homeless guy $100, good job.
