Why is the pre-allo board way more active than the allo board?

Just curious about people's speculation, but the pre-allo board is obviously the most popular on all of SDN. Do you guys think this is because once you actually begin med school, you won't have time to post on SDN? Or perhaps once you're in you just don't need SDN anymore? Other reasons? Commence discussion! 😀

Most of the people that visit SDN are users rather than contributors. Since the most useful information people get from SDN relates to applying to med school - especially the school-specific threads - it makes sense that usership drops off significantly once people get in.

At least that's my theory.

I think it's because there are a lot of premeds who are surfing the net for advice and chance on SDN. There are more people in pre-allo, but they are less dedicated to the section. Also, I think that there's a kind of "community" feel around pre allo. Just my speculation

I agree with the "community" feel, especially in the Class of 20xx threads and the Late Night Thread.

Because once you are in there is no sense talking about it anymore. Why does hSDN get less attention than all the other sections? Probably for the same reason, because those who are pass that stage do not feel like talking about it in the past-tenths. The late night thread is an exception as it still applies to most. But what else are we suppose to talk about in the allo section? There is really not that much since everyone is in the same boat at that point, whereas with pre- you have people of varied levels of admissions with different schools.

And also the section is closer to the top. So anyone that just discovered message boards for the first time is more likely to post here without knowing the general rules of them, such as posting in the right section instead of waiting for the mod to move your posts.

Nine times out of ten, the first reply to most threads is a troll post, often ironically questioning if said OP is a troll. You start writing a reply that you carefully thought through and hope that it will be helpful for at least one person and by the time you click "Submit Reply" you look like a fool in not following the the herd.

That's because nine times out of ten, the person asking the question:

1) failed to do ANY sort of research on his/her own, and
2) didn't bother to search the forums to see if their question was answered before (which it most likely has been)

I don't think anyone has any problem helping out with legitimate issues. The problem is people use SDN as a way to do absolutely nothing and just sponge off of people's desire to be helpful. A majority of the questions on the first page of the pre-allo board can be answered by a simple Google search. Nearly all of them can be answered with three minutes of effort. For most people, that seems to just be too much.

For most people, that seems to just be too much.

This forum has gotten progressively worse because more and more of the discussion is simple elementary stuff that could be found with minimal effort and so instead of constantly repeating "your major doesn't matter"; "your favorite color doesn't matter"; "this orgo book is probably the best"; "your schedule looks fine"... people put similar minimal effort into their responses.

Voila. Memes and bitter sarcasm galore.
