When signing up to take the MCAT, it asks "Are you a US citizen?" followed by "Are you also a citizen of another country?"

Why do they want to know if you're a citizen of another country or not?

it's for the statistical analysis only. just like they ask for sex or race. they give a report each year breaking down average scores based on key demographic information. us citizen and not is one of the matrixes they use. it becomes only a factor in when you apply to schools since some won't consider no U.S citizens or legal residence or have limited slots for foreign applicants.

So if you're US citizen and a citizen of another country, what category do you lie in (citizen, foreigner)?

I bet AAMC will sell lists to schools. Some schools will want lists of US citizens only because of admission restrictions in place by their state gov't (funding source) and some schools will want US citizens and non-citizens. There might be schools that want non-citizens only although I can't imagine why. In any case, having this information helps AAMC slice and dice their list of contacts. Schools then use these to target advertising to students including offering free secondaries, etc for students who fit certain targeted demographics.

Let's not overthink this now....

Haha you're right. I recently spoke with a doctor that told me that the AAMC was inherently rigged against foreigners (he said that's why the verbal/CARS section is so hard). Just wanted to make sure this won't be somehow used against me....even though I'm a naturalized citizen

Or perhaps that they just want people who can effectively communicate with patients in the most spoken language of America...

i hardly doubt that its purposely rigged against foreigners. i am a naturalized citizen myself and came to this country with my family as refugees from a war torn country and no one in my family spoke any english before we came here. I scored a respectable 128 on the CARS section. the section is not any harder than any of the other sections. those who think otherwise IMO are making excuses for not doing so well on it.

My two cents would be that... no, it's not RIGGED against foreigners BUT it is much more difficult for them to get into a US med school. Think about it, most US MD schools are there because of a need of the local population for physicians. It's true that med school graduates go to other states, BUT the fact remains that they usually stay domestic. Why should a US med school invest all that time and money training a foreign student when the chance of them moving back to their own country after their residency is high? (higher than a US citizen anyway). It's roughly the same logic that public schools have a heavy preference for in-state residents. There also the chance that the foreign student might not finish due to financial (no access to federal aid) or legal (that's why they require at LEAST a permanent residency status) reasons that are usually not a problem for citizens.

However, OP, in your case, I don't think it's worth any worry... A US citizen is a US citizen (no matter what the road to it was).

Yeah, to add to this, the NBA is rigged against midgets and the NFL is rigged against people who can’t throw a spiral.

And I swear the Grammys are rigged against people who can’t sing or play an instrument. WTF.
