Does it not want to release its data to USNWR because its rank would be too low? How does it stack up in the Southeast compared to other med schools in the Southeast?

The only people who take US Snooze rankings seriously are pre-meds and medical school Deans.

It's fine school. I wouldn't place it in a class like Vandy anymore than I'd put the WWII battleship USS Tennessee in the same class as the USS Iowa.

I'd put Tulane, SLU, Wake and Miami in the same class. I dont' have a good read on all the state schools of the region though, a number of which highly favor IS residents.

More importantly though, 49 primaries????? 31 secondaries????? Dude, that must have been a lot of work.

There will be a day (hopefully) soon when enough schools agree to stop submitting data to USNews and either research a different metric or instead focus on "% in specialty of choice" and "% at top 3 on rank list" and data like that. There's just too much ghost in the machine. Many residencies are similarly trying to buck the doximity rankings for relying an absurd amount on subjective responses.

Lol yeah. I work full time too. This summer wasn’t terribly fun, but lots of prompts did repeat.

What is the best resource to gain an understanding of schools and quality? As a Louisiana resident I have no idea how say Tulane stacks up to LSU

That's kind of the whole problem. I'd say you could use matriculant stats as a good surrogate for competitiveness up to a certain point. Then compare curricula and see what appeals to you more; grades vs P/F, PBL vs more lecture-heavy, recorded vs unrecorded, 2 year pre-clinical vs 1.5, step scores, etc. It takes more effort on your part but I'd say works better than just applying to the top 20 schools because you have a strong app.

It’s a pretty good school in that they have nice facilities and good clinical training (based on my recollection from interview day).

I remember one of the big issues with Tulane when I visited was that they had very little research going on. They have a bunch of institutes (like the tropical disease school) that do great population health stuff, but very little in the way of basic & clinical science.

If I had to guess that means tulanes NIH funding would be pretty low, which would drag its rank down much further than one would expect given the caliber of its students & training sites.

Hence why they may have just decided not to be ranked - the ranking system would not accurately assess them based on their strengths and weaknesses
