why isn’t it cool to be a nerd?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
sadly when people talk about a "love of learning" there's just as much chance that person is actually a gunner rather than nerd.

...and the fact that you used the term "rising junior" clearly a sign that you are a gunner... the worst type of all premeds.

This is probably a dumb question, but what do you mean by "gunner?"

Gunner

A person who is competitive,overly-ambitious and substantially exceeds minimum requirements. A gunner will compromise his/her peer relationships and/or reputation among peers in order to obtain recognition and praise from his/her superiors.

That chic in the front row of our class who always raises her hand, takes on additional assignments, and wrote a 25 page answer on our final when all that was required was 10 pages is such a gunner.

why is the term "rising" met with such disdain around these boards?

I personally dislike it because it sounds pretentious...

I always say, I've finished/completed (if I am trying to sound more professional) grade 3, or I am going to/entering grade 4/4th grade.

Rising 4th grader, rising college sophomore... bleh... pass.
