Why MD/PhD if you can do research with MD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know I'm late for responding to this thread, but some areas of research require advanced degrees that are NOT covered by a medical degree. For instance, I am interested in doing a dual MD-Phd in the social sciences; medicine has its social aspects but doesn't prepare you to do advanced work with different cultures, groups, etc. I realize that most MD-Phd programs are oriented toward biological and chemical science PhDs but there is a minority of us who are social science oriented.

A part of me dies when Ph.D's argue without sources to back them up.
